Hi there, i completed Half Life 2! but was very anti climactic :hmph: anyway, so i thought i'd try out soem cheats now that i've finished the game. So i give it a go, everything working, owning alot with my weapons etc :P But then i wanetd to test out "npc_create npc" spawns, so i tried metropolice, combine_s and alot of others and they'rwe all working, but i REALLY wanted to spawn a strider becuase i think they rock.
so i go to my console and typ ein "npc_create npc_strider" nothing happends, i try again pointing at the ground to make sure, and still nothing... so i thought id try "npc_create npc_combine" and the whole game crashes :S

anyone know what im doing wrong or am i missing something?

Thanks in advance,

Make sure cheats are enabled.

Strider spawns are broken. Spawned striders won't move. And you'll want to spawn npc_combine_s and not npc_combine, the latter always crashes my HL2.

The striders you see in the game are waypointed to move on specific paths.
Just like Rabarber said, they wont do shit, when you spawn them.
They only attack you if you get too close.

Hmm, i enabled cheats and still nothing, and even though they may be crap, i still think they're cool :P
Ty for the responds though guys :D i appreciate it.

To successfuly spawn a strider you must first noclip into the air. Then use the code "give npc_strider* and the strider will spawn below you. Use this for choppers and gunships too, if you use the npc_create command with them they spawn underground.

Npc_combine crashes the game, so does killing an npc_stalker.

stalker npc crashes because it attempts to look for the physics ragdoll..and there is none for hl2.

The ichtyosaur doesn't have 1 too. But the stalkers were in the game, unlike the ichy...

Stalkers are in the game, but the players never fights them. The reason the game still looks for them is because Valve changed the model of the Stalker at one point - the new one didn't have attachment points for the laser or a ragdoll animation.

Ichthyosaurs never had a ragdoll animation.

Ty all of you! it has really helped :D
And yeah, im starting Ep1 today :)

Actually, I can kill stalkers in my game without a crash, they just freeze in mid-air and become a hologram sort of thing; everything just passes through them. I could also pick up the airboat with the gravity gun without crashing. My copy of the game seems to be marginally more stable than others'.

Airboat should be stable with the gravity gun under any circumstances - it's the jeep and the APC that seem to make trouble.

I could pick up the jeep too :cheese:. Not the APC though.

Picking up the jeep or apc forces the engine to do tons of unecessary calculations that will heavily drop one's fps, due to the wheels traction/friction or whatever complicated crap there's in the qc files.

The airboat is one big solid prop, so it's the same as picking up a normal crate or barrel.

My stalker and icky are fine when killed, just turning into lifeless reference poses. Never crashed

Hopefully the Orange Box update should fix those little bugs, like give the stalkers that rag doll and laser from Episode One, have roller mines flash red when caught in an explosion before blowing up, give the soldiers new tricks like ducking, not just HDR.

And the stuck to ground in Our Benefactors bug, of course.

But could they give the ichy a ragdoll? Or would it seem too weird, that it would just suddenly stop moving and rise to the surface as fast as the other ragdolls do?

Well maybe they could give it an animation, like the antlion guard, when it gets killed and THEN turn it into a ragdoll, that will slowly rise to the surface, like something heavy and out of this world.

I really don't think they'll polish, fix, or add any gameplay asset in Half-Life 2, that's not how business works I'm afraid.

The icky's AI itself is unfinished, I don't beleive they'll re-add it back in episode two either.

Why waste their time fixing an entity that isn't going to be used?

Well it DOESN'T have to be in Ep.2. Some later episode.
I mean the ichy is something they HAVE to bring back sooner or later.

No, they really don't. The Ichthyosaur was one of the few creatures in HL that I didn't enjoy fighting. In fact, it could be the only one.

You mean it freaked you out or it just didn't do well as an enemy?

I found it annoying and frustraiting to fight.

Infact, in my last playthrough of HL1 I just avoided all the ichies instead of bothering to fight them. The one in the dam bit me in the ass though.
