Stuck at start of road to Ravenholm

Got my grav gun and at the very beginning of Road to Raveholm. At the bottom of what looks like a lift/elevator shaft with a ladder on the left with the first 10ft or so covered by a metal mesh grill (so that I can not climb it).

I've guessed I have to stack the objects (barrell, crates etc) to get above the mesh grill, this I've done - the problem is it still won't let me climb the ladder! Looking down I am above the mesh! I can jump to the left onto a wooden beam stuck to the wall but there's nowhere that I can see to go from there...

Any ideas? Getting frustrated

Whack the padlock off the mesh grill at the bottom and smack it open with the gravity gun, letting you climb the ladder.

Maybe you're not supposed to go up? If I remember right, I jumped down a shaft at some point in Ravenholm. Ravenholm is quite a confusing place. Wander around.
