Stuck in sandtrap

I must have made a wrong turn because I am embarressed to say I am completely lost in sandtrap. I am in some kind of abandoned mining camp.

I have started the sand-thumping machine and have found all the power-up, I am standing on a center outcropping above a destroyed tugboat.

Also I found an ammo box full of these devices that look like handles that I can't use, just throw around. DId I miss something?

Long since got rid of the buggy...

This is the area where you can't touch the sand because ant lions will eat you.

you gota get across the sand just keep going until you can see rocks that you can climb up. you gota use the manipulator to lay stuff on the floor that you can walk on. after you get over the rock jump down onto the sand to progress.

just keep jumping on the rocks and youll eventually come to a really big area of sand basically then climb up the sloped rock

I have been trying to get out of this valley for 8 hours now...

I have ocean and a tug to one side, across the valley to the right of this picture is a valley of sand (and ant lions).

I can't get climb any of the mountains...what now?

If you are where I think you are .. just hop down .. you WILL touch the sand, it's ok, an ant lion guard will appear, it takes 5 explosions to kill.
Once you kill it, antlions will stop coming and a vortigount will approach you and .. (spoilers )

Well, I jumped down and about 20 ant lions were dead when they finally took me out...HELP!

Also I haven't gotten any no ant lion bait...

lol hasan is talking way farther away from where u are, so he kinda spoiled it. there is a way, just use barrels boxes n stuff to get accross

HB, that pic isn't very informative. I've just completed sandlands witthout too much bother. Post a couple better pics maybe. Or (i think) you need to look for logs lying on rocks to be part of the route. Use them. If there wasn't a visible route, I just winged it across the sand shooting the lions. Eventually you can reach rocky areas and the antlions stop spawning.

hmm well, looks like it's another place like cargo said. but I thought so cuz the place in my mind has a "sand-thumping machine" and a .. umm .. "higher ground", seperating two areas.

HoneyBadger, the exit is IN your screenshot. It's at the right-hand edge - see where the rocks in the distance dip down a little? Just beyond the ground-thumping device? That's where you need to go. Climb up and over the rocks.

BTW, if the "closed captions" tab is selected in /options/audio, the captions inform you much more about all the game sounds and environment. The machines referred to as "sand thumpers" on this thread are actually "antlion repellers". Also with audio captions on, you get advance notice of headcrabs "headcrab noise" & and other creatures + (some of the ) inaudible radio messages are displayed as text so you can understand them. It's quite good.

I could never understand what these machines were for and whether to turn them on or off. But they certainly do repel antilions.

Ok, thanks all..I am finally out.

The Queen showed up with 6 little ones and a couple rockets later I made it out.

BTW, so where do I get any more crossbow bolts, that is one cool weapon!

Crossbow bolts start showing up in supply boxes in later missions. There are also some bolts in the little side areas on Highway 17. (there is a 3-story house to the side of a road, on the top floor is a crossbow - but watch out...)

This is a spoiler.. in a way... The entire secret to Sandtrap is the Grav Gun. Move panels, pallets, doors, planks, and anything else you can walk on, onto the sand in a trail of about three. Then go back and pick up the first one and keep going. Investigate ALL buildings, no matter how far off the track they are, because they universally contain something you can use. Turn on the pounders whenever you find one. You will find some rather long planks, use those to bridge gaps between unclimbable rocks. You will find teeter-totters, big ones, use them quickly while the end you want to be up is UP and you will be quite successful.

I recommend you use the anti-air missile launcher for three shots to the Big Mamma. If you are standing near the cliff when she gets to you with your swarm, she will stick her nose under you and knock you up the cliff and give you an excellent perch to shoot down at her. I used my suppression gun, and .357 Magnum to take her out. You DO need to kill her to move on... I won't say why.. but take my word for it!

Here's a little something you can try to kill the Ant Lion boss if you're out of explosives. (or hoard them like me)

When the Ant Lion Guard (old name for the big momma Antlion) charges at you, make sure you're standing in front of a wall. Just sprint to the side. The Guard will stun itself when it runs into the wall. Use this opportunity to put a few rounds into it. This works everytime you fight one.

Although the Ant Lion Guard may summon ant lions occasionally, leaving one alive tends to keep its summoning at a minimum.

Also, a way to get across the sand at the end is to grab a couple of doors and just 'walk' them across the sand. (step on one, drag the other door over, step on that, etc.)
