Stuck on chamber 18

I'm in the large room with turrets on platforms. I've taken out all the turrets ....... now what?! There's a button on a tower you can get to with portals but you can't stand on the tower. It opens a door leading to an energy ball receptor. You push the button & the door stays open for like 2 seconds!!

You've got to be quick with your portals, direct the energy ball to the receptor, portal yourself ot the button, open it and ta da!

That's the place where I was stuck for the longest time - pretty much the only place I was stuck at for more than a few minutes.

You obviously want to get the energy ball through that door. Hint: get the ball moving there first, and then open the door. You need to be quick, though. A fuller description:

So you place one portal there at the far war opposite the energy ball receiver. The other portal goes where the energy ball will be shot. As soon as the ball leaves the portal, you need to move. It'll take some time to travel, but not a lot. So you quickly place one portal on that segment near the button tower and the other portal down on the water-level platform - I assume you've already figured that part out. So, press the button and hopefully the door will open like a second before the ball arrives.

I pressed the button and then jumped in the chamber myself. The voice said something about safety and then said an escape door (can't remember the exact wording) would open. Nothing happened, except the door I jumped through remained open, so I could then quite easily set the portals up.
