It's a pain in the ass to get in my car, then drive to a magnusson spawner and get a bomb then drive back to where the stryder is. Is there a way to spawn one of these guys? :dozey:
What I did was just wait until the Striders and Hunters came close to the Silo and then run over all the Hunters. There are 3 places in close proximity to the Silo to get the bombs which makes it easy to get this challenge done. I hopped a lot which lets you move like 1.5x faster than running. I seemed to avoid Hunters hitting the bomb by moving very quickly left-right-left-right as well.
First thing I did was run over the hunters. Then I took out the striders. The striders seemed to ignore me for the most part anyway. They have a destination unlike in previous games were they were just gunning for me.
- 3 crossbow shots OR
- 4 shotgun shells OR
- One rocket OR
- One pulse rifle energy ball OR
- An undetermined number of crowbar swings with godmode on.
FIRST: I think the 'event' starts once you reach the sawmill...So if you wanted to "cheat," you could potentially run around and take the bombs out of the dispensers and just throw them everywhere on the ground (in good places, if youre smart), before reaching the sawmill and starting the striders' push. I dont know if that many would despawn them, or if they die after a certain amount of time, or if the event starts after X amount of time, but that could help you (though its surely 'cheating'). When I had a free moment during my battle after I killed a strider with the alarm sounding right near the silo, I took out a few bombs from the dispenser nearest the silo and put them hidden away, resting in a few rocks near a tree or two (look east of the device, ~northeast of the silo). However, I never really needed to get those in the end, I just waited the few seconds for a new bomb to respawn, and killed the silo-near striders conventionally.
Anyway with that out of the way, some suggestions:
Sounds like you are solely using your car to grab a bomb, drive to the strider, and take it out. Give the strider some time, and let it come to the nearest dispenser. If there are more than one strider on your radar, try to take out the one nearest a dispenser (if you can tell).
-Certainly make sure you are taking out the hunters first...if they are paying attention, when you fire a bomb at the strider, their primary target switches from you/rebels to the magnusson bomb...so unless you can fire that thing and shoot it the second it hits the strider, take them out first.
-One person commented about running the Hunters over, so you can certainly think about that...
-There's also an achievement to prevent any of the buildings from being destroyed, so it's apparent that's a possibility as well...if your buildings are getting destroyed (i think two of mine did, possibly three)..try to come up on the buildings/striders from behind next time.
-I'm PRETTY sure the Striders never shot at me when I was behind them (they are facing/moving towards the silo), UNLESS I had stuck them with a Magnusson device -- that is, I noticed once I stuck one, it turned around (very fast) and started firing at me. Had to run under it (luckily didnt get punctured by its foot!) and shoot it that way. So it might help to drive behind them, after youve taken out the hunters (unless you dont want to kill hunters)

Also applicable, from something for a separate overall-review post:
...switching from the grav-gun, which you just used to stick a Math-device onto a strider, to the pistol (or SMG in short bursts) to blow it up, to the crossbow to shoot a few shots at Hunter A while shift-running and strafing to it while avoiding its blue explode-o-pop thingys, then running out of ammo and switching to the .57 to finish Hunter A off and start weakening Hunter B, then reaching Hunter B and finishing him off with your shotgun's double-barreled blasts, THEN taking out Hunter C solely with repeated assaults of a Tree Trunk from your grav-gun (since you're close enough), and finally, to get Hunter D off your back (who is a ways away), waiting till he's stationary (though probably shooting at you!) and firing a Combine Overwatch Rifle's Energy Ball at him (hoping like hell he doesn't move in the next 2 seconds!)

Re: jeremy's post....Surprising they take that many shotgun/crossbow shots! I mean one crossbow bolt takes out pretty much anything (except a hunter or anything vehicle-like) on hard!
Hunters destroy Magnusson devices laying around on the floor. I think the best strategy is to blow the striders when they are close to the silo. Hunters like gravity gun kicking btw.
I just killed the hunters before trying to take out the striders. Wasn't that hard on medium.
Running them over, using ar2 spheres, or even rpg rounds are some of the quickest ways to take out hunters. But another one is to pick up a prop (i used logs, mostly) and use it as a shield. Get a few flechettes to stick to it and then punt it at a hunter, they'll take damage from the prop as well as the flechettes exploding on them. Works great if you're low on ammo.
I found the 2 best ways to take out the hunters were mowing them down in the car (although they sometimes dodge it) and hitting them with the tree trunks lying around (2 hit kills).
