(:

why did the mod put this in off-topic... thats just completely -explitive- :x

it should really be in modification news now that I think about it...

Half-Life 2 Discussion is for Half-Life 2 discussion and Modification News is a limited rights board so that only MOD developers can create threads about their Half-Life 2 mods.

It belongs here

/me slaps Chris_D

Svencoop is going to be one of the most popular mods for HL2 :)

And this is a discussion about the fact that Sven Co-Op for HL1 is going to be distributed via Steam...

Nevermind. I just look like a fool yet again. Thanks

I think if we see a version of NS on the source then that will be proclaimed king of all mods!!!

My personal opinion. I also can't wait to see DOD2 and I would kinda like to see what they are gona do to CS2.

Omg sooooo many cool things......

indeed  this seems to be the first real actual good thing to come of steam officially valve "supported" (not owned) modifications

erm, I just went over to check the HL2world site to make sure they are still crappy....

And I cam across something interesting.

It seams people who have the so called "beta" are having problems that just started appearing recently...
Abnormal crashes and the game not working anymore. Whats odd is that its happening to alot of people for no apparent reason...

There is a thread there that suggests that it might have somthing to do with a anti copyright system put in place by valve. A self destruct mechanism if you will. This means that after time the game basically destroys itself if it thinks it is a pirated version of the software. Operation flashpoint does the same thing!

If this is true we could see alot of people messing arround with their precious betas trying to get cheats and hacks etc get very pissed as their game uninstalls itself and makes sure that the game can't run on their system again!!!

If this is all true then all I can say is WOOT VALVE!!!

:P

Oh and I might email valve asking them tomorrow unless someone beats me to it.

Heres for hopeing..

Lol, now that is funny!

Oh and btw, NS is going on Steam too, they've been talking about it for a long time. It's cool to see that new games are becoming oficially supported.

Or, anyone with half a brain could kill of any last bit of data regarding HL2 (registry settings mostly). I deleted the stolen build, it felt wrong after awhile, now I'm awaiting HL2 more again..

Anyhow, the whole HL2 system crash crap is absolutely unfounded. People just don't know how to keep their systems in working order :cheese:

Edit: This also sounds like the whole "OMG VALVE IS TRACKING PEOPLE'S IPS WHO DL THE STOLEN BUILD" and "ATi's latest drivers fry monitors!" deal.. it's just a stupid widespread rumor

thats what I thought, either that or the mod tried to multiply 9*9999999 and had a protection fault...

Probably, but it would be good...

And there are ways you can stop people finding things in the registry you know.....

anyway!
This isnt like valve tracks your IDs or anything. If its true its a legitamate way of countering piracy. And downloading the beta is kind of that.....

Yes, you can hide stuff in registry, but it can also be found if it's in the registry..

Besides, why would VALVe put that in? Unless they let it get stolen (o nos~ conspiracy!~@~!!@ lol).. because, the devs testing HL2 and it screws their capability of playing HL2 over.. that's logical :)

Edit: sorry, I'm sick and a little cranky, lol

no no no, i'm sorry, you dont understand me.

If its true, then it wasnt put in to stop leaked versions, it was put in to stop people burning the final game on disc and handing it out to other people for cash. AKA piracy. It just so happens it worked on the stolen version too!

Well, in theory, none of this is confirmed and is probably wrong....

This is more or less Modification News. It is definitely NOT HL2 related.

lmao! now that would be funny haha. Course I'm sure those with the stolen files will claim their versions are fine, just like they did when the rumors started of the virus' in some versions. I believe its called denial

It's a HL2 mod is it not? :)

I give up. Yeah yeah, this is HL2 stuff Munro. Stick it on the news page too.

Yeah so anyway. I think I might actually try Sven Co-Op when v3.0 is released. I think I tried a very early version of it and wasn't too keen but I might as well now. Have they posted a revised edition of the changelog yet? Even for someone who hasn't played before I'm sure that'll be interesting to see.

Just to clarify the changelog isn't public just yet- but its looking pretty damn good. Only thing annoying me is the filesize (estimated 80 meg update or 110 meg full- but this time the full map archive will be included).

With respect to the beta self destruct, if that functionality was in there it would be in the source code and someone would have spotted it, even if it wasn't found till later it would only be a case of snipping that code fragment out and recompiling. Of course this does you no good with respect to the rewritten code that will go retail but it kills the whole the beta will screw your system so you can play the retail nonsense.

true to a point.. unless that specific killcode is required to run it atall. I think its safe to say the Valve programmers putting five years into it will be able to do a better job than someone in a few weeks trying to undo it (and don't anyone be going quoting the old "its easier to destroy than it is to create" line)

also it would mean whoever got it would have had to go through every line of code to find those bits that would kill it, all Valve would have had to have was a dummy bit of code that wasn't very well hidden, but well enough to seem genuine, while the real one is buried deep

and so im not going off-topic. sven coop any good? ;)

Wow, thats pretty cool if its real. I think it will help a lot with the piracy issue...

ON TOPIC

Yeah, I like Sven COOP. Some of the maps are pretty cool, and its just fun play coop on H-L.

Sven Co-op is great fun, can't wait to play it in HL2, I just really need broadband (bloody telco.).

As for the self-destruct thing, it can't be foolproof. The game has to remember how many times/when it was first executed somehow. Without using a file or regkey I don't see how something like that could be hard coded.

could always put the date checking thing in one of the image or model files, nobody's going to suspect one of those if its calculated by a harmless access date of a particular file or two, disguised to look like a simple operation in the code.

on-topic: sven coop sounds cool then, might give it a try at some point soon then

srry, but from *cough* experience *cough*, the whole pirated version crash thing is false, through and through.

BTW... The person I know who has it (i lost it in a format and decided to actually support valve for once :afro: ) doesn't even play the stolen version anymore. Just when this whole thing started up we decided to try it out and when we found it to be false thought i would report back.

on-topic (kind of) - the svencoop for the won hl doesn't let me join online games cuz of dll inconsistancy. just installed latest version from svencoop site. any help? (yea, i know it's even further than on topic, but while we're on the topic of svencoop):afro:

When I played through the Half-Life single player for the first time, I played it with a friend (who had already played it through himself) using Sven Coop. I think I've never had as much fun when playing a game as we had then (the latter part of deus ex comes close, though). And my mean friend always forced me to lead us when he knew that something nasty was gonna happen and I pissed my pants every time. Bastard.
