Gordon catches a glimpse of the Combine mortar and crab synth armies in the Citadel. While you never fight them in Half-Life 2,but what are they?
Will we fight them in Episode 3?

They may be in Episode 3. They may not be. I did expect them in Episode 2, but if ultimately they didn't fit, I'm glad they were cut.
It'd be quite a novel concept to show an enemy that you never have to fight in a game.

I expect they'll be in a mod at some point even if they aren't featured in the main game.

But as it stands, nobody knows yet.

well,if the Borealis is located in an arctic terrain, synths would make worthy opponents, seems like they would be fit for snow and ice

Mortar synth's are more like bombers to the gunships ground attack craft. May also be a multi-role fighter if they've decient enough weapons to engage air targets.

For all we know crab synths could be tanks, or even organic APC's.

Crab Synth should fit with Arctic very well, while having a crushingly high damage. Maybe a modified Crab Synth in Arctic? Like white color etcetera, if that's possible.

Puts me in mind of something from something... but I can't remember what.

It was like white with black stripes... like an artic tiger

I took that idea from DoD's arctic vehicles.

I think what I'm thinking of is the alien from Star Wars Episode II, forgets the name. But it's not white, so I don't know where I get that idea.

That's the one. They should get some of them on the Artic. Would be awesome :p.

Don't think the hair could be pulled off quite as well...

If they were ever good enough to be in, they would have been in by now. They look ugly, perform no interesting function and aren't missed.

well,as I recall,we still haven't left white forest, what if a synth shoots down the chopper, and you need to escape on foot, the green synth would blend nicely...

But there isent that much to do in the arctic.Snow here, snow there,oh look, more ice over here, right by the snow.Hey,is that a base?
-No,its more snow on top of frozen water

Yeah, they do, but most people have seen them before. They're a bit dark too.

They would be fun enemies, merely because we don't know what they do. For all we know they could be totally harmless, or merely a form of transportation.

but why would the combine build a giant ground/air transport
they already have dropships anyway

I once saw a beta leak video, where somone got the mortar synths to work. They just fly around like scanners, and shoot laser beams. Of course, if Valve gets around to adding them properly, they could be quite different.

Agreed. I hope we see the other kinda, the ones that drop the hoppermines and "spot" for striders in Episode Three. The barely made an appearance in the main game, and almost disappeared in Episode One.

Why does every body want to fight them? I htink they were just meant to give you a glimpse at the wierd multitudes the combine have under their control.

You could also ask, why didn't we see hunters in HL2 but fight them in ep2?

My thought about the Hunters has always been that they're a special "reserve" force, kept in some uninhabited places in the arctic or something like that (no Combine reinforcements arriving on Earth since end of Half-life 2).

They were probably kept quite secret, unlike the striders and gunships which they paraded around in the streets even before the rebellion.

I honestly expected to at least see another glimpse of them - the citadel appeared to be quite the busy synth hive, but when the top blew off and everyone left, why didn't these guys go with them? I'm sure it was a conscious decision by Valve to simply not do that animation, but it would have really strengthened the impression that the blow you struck against the combine shook them up. The parade of striders, gunships, and troops seemed more like an escort away from the citadel for the advisors than 'abandon ship'.

Because they don't care. Death absolutely TERRORIZES them, and don't give two shits about Mr. Overwatch R. Trooper if it increases their chance of death by any degree.

They might not be transport as such, but sort of like vehicles... um... hard to explain thoughts... *attempts to gesticulate wildly*

A short creature packing the firepower of a strider for when the height of a strider is a disadvantage.

and the Crab Synths would be big enough to transport combine soldiers...hmmm...
the mortar synths are way to small for any kind of transport though

Yes. I was, earlier, getting at the Crab Synths being some sort of transport.

I'd say, in a mountain environment, it would be able to climb up stuff, negating the need for roads. Great of the enemy has air approaches covered.

If HL3 involves going to the Combine homeworld, or another planet- a common theory- I bet we'll see these. Valve seems to like displaying things ridiculously early (Advisors in HL2... and Episodes 1 and 2...) in non-combat situations.

If we do, it would be kind of funny to see a Dropship not being a dropship. I don't know why.

well,in HL2,in water hazard, after you get the Mh2b mounted, theres a dropship carrying an APC,(shoot it down if you don't believe me)so the dropship may take new roll on delivering only APC's and Crab Synths being heavily armed transport creature/objects
I still want to see a purpose for the Mortar Synths though...

Technically a combine would be able to sit on a synth, much like we would do on a horse

But Advisors are a little different, as we've always known them to be the closest to the 'real' combine presence. A more likely comparison would be with the Stalkers, which we saw in the same sequence... but we got round to 'fighting' them a single game later. Plus, Stalkers were always right in your face whereas the Crab and Mortar synths were glimpsed once and from quite a distance. My feeling is that Valve found themselves wanting to add a little more visual variety to the pod sequence, so they put in some failed but modeled synths. They really don't look that interesting to me, and they don't have enough visually in common with the Striders, Gunships and Hunters IMO (though Hunters are themselves quite distinct from larger Synths... if they even ARE synths.)
