Hey guys. All the other TF2 "noob help" threads are either very short and not relevant or very old.

I just got TF2 last week, and boy what a shock. I am a complete noob at this game; I rake in a measly 4-6 kills a round and around 12 kills a game. :smoking:

This game is HARD as balls, I know everyone says it requires teamwork. But so far I have seen none of this. All it is is about people running around, and doing their own thing. I've noticed that the Heavy is pretty much the jesus class, especially when it has a Medic chilling behind it racking up points.

I need some help in terms of how to get better. My go to classes ar the Sniper and the Demoman since I can only seem to be any use with and get kills with them. Does anybody have any general or specific tips/strategies to help me get better? I have a lot of experience with FPS games so I don't need to hear dum-dum pre-school answers like "jump" or "know the maps".

Start off with the Medic. He gives you a good idea of how most other classes play since you're hiding behind their back while healing them. Btw Medics should always be your first target when you have multiple to choose from. That Heavy isn't invincible anymore when his hitpoints drop below 300. To get an idea of how much damage you (or the person you're healing) are doing, turn on 'Display damage done as numbers over your enemy' in options -> multiplayer -> advanced. While you're there are also turn on 'Medigun continues healing without holding down fire button'. Saves you some carpal tunnel problems. For teamwork pick maps that really require it. Payload maps (Badwater Basin or Gold Rush) for example because the team needs to focus on the cart.

Add me as a friend on Steam and if you see me online, send me a chat request and I'll walk you through some basics. It's much easier to get the gist of various class tactics by trying them out on an empty server first.

Try tremor11

I'll look you up.

edit - just noticed that our Steam profile doesn't show with our posts? Do I need to re-enter that. I added you as a friend.

Try and find a decent server too with lots of regulars, they generally have more team work in them then a 24/7 dustbowl server for example.

Medic is a good start, but you won't be getting many kills, only assists. If you have a full ubercharge, and you're taking damage and you think you're going to die, use the uber anyway, it's better to use it and maybe not kills as many, rather than just dying because you were trying to save it for a better encounter.

Pyro is also a good class, but does take a bit of skill to be good with him. He can defend herself with his airblast from her flamethrower which will deflect rockets, grenades, stickies, flares and arrows, and if any of those deflected projectiles hit someone they will mini-crit whoever they hit. Pyro is best used for ambushing people, but she can cause a lot of havok against a big group of people on a cart. :)

Keep playing and you'll get used to it :)

These videos are quite old now with all the updates TF2 has seen, but you can learn some basic pointers from them still.

Like Shaker said, the medic is a good class to observe what is actually going on amongst the chaos. You will probably get some weapons drops as you play...these alternate weapons give the classes other ways to attack which you may want to leave till you've learned the class basics!

Also - server choices. Try and pick standard TF2 servers. 'Vanilla' TF2 in the server name is GOOD. Try and avoid 'instant respawn'...it's just crazy. The optimum player number is 24 players, 32 will also be a bit hectic but you can try both and decide. Lastly learn your maps. Try these two main maps to begin with - learn where the health packs are and where you can flank around etc. cp_dustbowl (capture points) and pl_goldrush (payload - pushing a cart to a end location). Knowing those layouts will help you a lot. Follow team mates as the medic, but don't run in front of them when going around a corner & don't stand still. Spies will turn up behind you when you stop thinking!
