When the retail version of HL2 comes out and is installed, will the game automatically detect if your system has an ATi graphics card and then boost the power, speed and grahics? or will we need like a patch or update to enable that feature? i have a 9800xt and i am trying out cs source and its pretty good but when i get to higher AA and Af even in 1024x768 it does slow down a bit. with 1024x768 and no aa and trilinear image quality i got 89 or something frames which is good, with 4xaa and 8xaf i got about 60 something and once i got about 75 to 78. Will the retail version of cs source run better and smoother?

The game will automatically detect your graphics but ATi cards don't get any specifiic "speed boost". I'm sure that if Valve had the ability to boost the power of the source engine then they'd add it.

60 frames isn't a low amount. I'd love to have that with those settings.

thats pretty much the performance you will get... :)

60 FPS is good with 4x AA and 8x AF, if you ask me. Thats like my target for a game like this.

So i should be happy?.......hold on ofcourse im happy, it will run better than doom3 with better graphics!!!

In my opinion, any thing above 30-40fps is just security. I really cannot tell the difference above that.

According to valve you can let HL2 detect your system and scale the lod accordingly, or you can set everything manually until you notice slowdown.
