i was just wondering after i posted my story theory and i mentioned that the combine citadel was eating the city in order to destroy the scientists bases but that seems a bit unlikley.

so what do you guys think its doing, i know the guy said its slowly eating its way through city 17 but for what purpose, why destroy it?

Well, in the new video the man on the screen says that the citadel was provided by the combine to help portect the city. I think, that its "eating" its way through the city in a effort to cleanse it. Basically, it is just a physical representation of the combines control over that particular city. Inside the wall if pretty much under the tight grip of the combine. Any that you encounter outside are look out posts and groups of combine which are trying to prepare the way.

Heh, i just made that up as a was typing but it actually seems to fit.

maby it collects materials for the building of the citadel? we are seeing the citadel in diffrent stages of construction.

Resources? Why do they seem to be shifting all the people around? Maybe they want to relocate them all behind the wall? Maybe the wall is to keep aliens out? Who knows?

who knows but i cant wait. Farrows explanation was pretty cool.

Ever seen the films 'Toys' starring Robin Williams? (crap film I know!)

Well, the best way I can compare the citadel taking over City 17 is by comparing it with the bit in that film where Robin William's uncle (or whatever relation he was) was slowly taking over the toy factory for his toy army experiments. Perhaps the combine are playing a similar trick.

I liked Toys as well; it had a great soundtrack.

I don't think its slowly eating away the whole city at all, I reckon its slowly moving, and it eats anything it approaches (because it needs a constant supply of material to move).

Anybody from the UK or Ireland probably know what I mean, because I got this idea when I watched the HALIFAX advert (The one with the giant building moving across the city, then out to sea)

The 'chomping' motion of the teeth-like structures leads me to believe the the citadel is devouring the city, and using the material to build the tower. This seems the most likely explanation to me.

Yeah, I agree.
The citadel might be a way to keep Xen aliens outside and getting materials to build the citadel itself.
Anyway, I can easily imagine Valve taking us to the top of the citadel and destroying it as a final stage. That would be sweet =]

"This last sequence we'll get a look at the Citadel at the center of the Alien Combine. The Combine is a Fortress that its slowly eating its way through the rest of City-17."

I thought that was enough info to know what it was doing.

 Lol, you could be right there. "We are saaaailing!" :D

The citadel is eating its way through resources to build Combine Clones (The bit with the gman and the 'hallucination' shows the interior of the citadel, and what look like pods).
Therefore the citadel has a mind of its own, it is like a living being, when Breen says 'Our benfactors', i think he is being sarcastic and referring to the Xen Aliens as this is like an organic kind of building.

Then again 'our benefactors' could be a larger group that controls the combine, a sort of world government.

I also think the Gman is allied with no party in this game, part of his mystery is that he is not a par of any type of organisation or anything. He is simply a manipulative retarded little shit who speaks like a fass.

"Uh buh, lul noottt dat i hav b33n 1mp|_Y1|\|g you have been sleepinging on teh j0b"

the first time i saw that wall on the shart strider vid, it gave me the creeps, sort of always there but you cant do anything? is the sad?

I agree that it is collecting resources to make combine clones.
However, I think someone's controlling it.

well do you guys think that the combines are aliens or somit ? if yes i dont agree with you ! but what are they , are they really clones ?

combine=combined

probably cyborgs or something.

I think the combine are cyborgs, think about it it would make a great statement, you have the aliens (organic) versus the combine (machine or mostly machine) its the age old nature vs machine/technology cliche.

hmm i like you guys :) ! im glad about that not everyone believes that the combine are aliens . . . but they are definetely more human then machine cos they have a lot of red blooooooood in their bodies :D

maybe the 'blood' you see is some sort of oil.

It's farfeched I know.

I think the Citadel is a big laser or some kind of gun/projectile to be launched/attacked at Xen/Nihilanth

Well that's certainly an original take on things. I have no idea what it does, but none of the suggestions I've read have convinced me.

btw eber in a voiceover from e3 2k3 (I think) the 'alien combine' is mentioned. So yeah, there would have to be some E.T. involvement... flying bicycles or something.

now you get a little too close to star wars :borg:

Look, the combine is a unified word for the "other invaders of earth". The striders, alien gunships etc are part of the combine force. The soldiers and metro cops are just like the strider's part of the combine force. The striders and alien gunship are alien, but I think the combine soldiers, and combine metro cops are human. I think it’s a combination (combine) of different races that either joined because they wanted to, or where captured and enslaved by the true founders of the combine force. Combine means 2 things: combine (combining/Combination of …) and (Harvest) so my guess is that it harvest's different races for their qualities, by destroying and plundering their world and enslaving them and adding them to their army to create some divine army or something.

This also puts me into the direction of the mini series “V” where the so called “friendly aliens” invade earth telling the government etc that they come in Pease while they slowly take over the government and take over the world to enslave humans and what not. This story seems to fit perfectly into the HL² info we already know.

Dr.Breen has come into contact with these combine beings and they promised him to deal with the Xen invasion… The xen invasion must have killed a lot of earth population and transport the people of earth to a safe place. But obviously the combine are evil but I think dr.breen has a to scientific look on things and wants to take all risks possible to speed up the evolution of mankind and her technology in order to ”Help” the people of earth. And I think Dr. Ali Vance wants to prevent this because he believes the combine are to dangerous or what not... it might fit into the... the one is wrong, but the other is even more wrong thing

EDIT.. whow I think I might have gotten carried away for a bit there :D

what makes you think the striders and gunships are alien ? nobody said that, its pure speculation and its not the truth !!
man ´we dont speak about star wars or star trek this is HL2 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hey evil a good summary, i dont think thats the case with the combine bit but what the hell....who knows.....bring the game out already!

no please wait with the releasedate until i update my pc hehe

same here lol... i dont want to play half-life 2 on a pc that can barely play counter-strike... ! lol

I've got a medium-end dx9 card so i'm expecting to play HL2 on medium settings at 800x600. I hope there'll be many options in the display settings for the game so that i can tweak and tweak 'til perfection. Should look good enough and at a good enough framerate.

Anywho, is the Combine Citadel that big shady building that is seen at the start of the Striders bink movie? The structure that seems to raise a section of itself and slam it back down a bit further out?

The Citadel itself is the upright bit, I think, the thing that looks a bit like a skyscraper... I personally just call the moving wall The Wall...

Ok.

Is it said that the Combine Citadel is eating away at City17 because of what "The Wall" is doing?

I think it was merely said that the Combine was eating away at the city... Not sure.

I've been hearing Pink Floyd's "The Wall" in my head ever since my last post...

Because valve has confirmed that the name of the manitee gunship is "alien gunship".

And since it is in te hands of the combine, it made me believe that the strider is alien to and from the same race because it resembles the strider in many ways and it looks nothing like man made. It is not a vehicle like some people assume, it is a biomechanoid. A biological creature with mechanical atrributes. The strider looks like a biological creature but has clearly some mechanical bits like the turret on its head and the canon dangeling below its body. The alien gunship looks like some biological buglike creature to, but it also has mechanical pars on its body, the rotor blade and the turret on its head.

And its not made of combine technology because if it was, then surely the citadel would look like these strider and alien gunship creatures, or the apc's and the helicopter and scanners.. no.. those things are combine tech. and the striders and slien gunships are not but clearly under the control of whatever leads the combine army.

Space elevator... that would rock. But would it be necessary in a world with teleportation?

Btw, reinforcing the biomech theory is the screenie Greg released in a thread recently. Very high resolution. :) Look at the main dangly gun and tell me it isn't partly biological.
