The Mines mentioned in the e3 vid

There is that part in the e3 vid with Father Gregori where he says he will show you to the mines. But I can't make out what he says right before that, can someone help me out?. Also, simple curiosity, but I wonder what the purpose of your pass through Ravenholm (or whatever its called) is. Maybe its to simply avoid the Combine forces.

But you start out in City 17. I think it's hard to follow what happens after what.
