Now, I have a 19inch flat screen and I play Hl2 on full resolution, but I find that even with such a conveniently big screen, I can hardly see what's going on around me.
There is something about the viewpoint, that you can't see enough around you. When I was playing Anticitizen One and Follow Freeman I felt like crying, because it took me so much cycling with the mouse, to see what's going on around me.
Does anyone else have this issue? Does anyone else find that there are such problems?

I have exactly the same setup and I don't see any problems with the view. (No pun intended).

I'm sorry I just don't agree with your point of view.

Okay, sorry, I had to say that. Now I also have the same setup and I have no problem with what you're talking about.

I know what you mean, but isn't it like that for any other FPS?
And what could solve this problem anyway? The only thing that could help with the 'view' is getting a wider screen, ooor you could do the double/triple monitor setup for some extra wide-screen play.
I think if you tried to change the POV...er FOV...whatever, it would make it look like you were running way faster and stuff, kinda screwing up the gameplay.
Until virtual reality headsets (or something similar) become as common as PCs, we're kinda stuck with this problem...which isn't actually much of a problem...

How about a screenshot, point out what the problem is?

i'll see if I can get one, but what I mean is that the combine are some small dots nearly. My LCD is relatively square: 1028:1024. I think I would need wide screen. Oh and BTw i only have this problem in big outdoor levels.

Bat, your problem is because Valve decided to reduce the FOV from 90 degrees to something like 70, "because it's more realistic" (their words).

Not only does this restrict your view, but it also caused a lot of motion sickness in people who don't normally have it playing FPS games.

I'm sure you could change the FOV in the console, but when jumping into a vehicle it changes to 90 deg anyway, until you jump out again.

Perhaps binding a key to "FOV 90" or something will do it.

The default field of vision in HL2 is set so that the player model is actually where you sit, and the screen is like a window to the game world. This is supposed to deepen the feeling of being in the game.
Just type "fov 99" in console if it bothers you, default is 60 or 70.
EDIT: Whoops, beaten.

thank you. I'll try it later.
BTW: I just found out that F5 key creates a screenshot and not a savegame. Imagine the suprise, when I opened my screenshots folder- about 200screens/
All this time I used to think that F5 is the save game key.
tttt

One thing you could try is increasing your mouse sensitivity so taht you can more quickly view the environment.

They had mentioned some time ago (possibly before it came out) that they decided on that level of panaramic (SP?) view because the wider it became, the more motion sick people would become.

i dont see a problem with it personally and i have a 19inch lcd display aswell. i always thought it was pretty good compared to alot of games im use to,

In my opinion, the view is fine. I dont see anything wrong with it.

Dude just change the FOV. Most games have a FOV of about 90, HL2 has it at 75... go figure.

I have no problem with the point of view- doesn't seem too different from other fps games.
However, i would like to see an fps utilise peripheral vision, once widescreen becomes more widely used- i think it could be used quite well. Take a bit of getting used to, but it'd be worth it.

nah, whenever I'm in an open space in C17 i feel like playing 'spot the Combine' . I'll change the FOv wateva it is nxt time i play Hl2

hmm...i didn't have this problem.
then again, i was so immersed in the game that i wasn't looking for such a problem.

/me shrugs
