Just wanted to hear from you guys what was in original Half-Life that was most impressive, innovative among other games or maybe just small detais that made this game outstanding at that time.

For me it was the fact that you couldnt hear firing if the shooter stood far away from you - you could only hear the bullet hitting somewhere around you (or you). It was quite realistic (though never "participated" in a real shooting like this IRL).

That can be also heard in HL2 in the bugbait demo where you first look around the corner and soldiers start to shoot - you can hear the bullets crashing the tiles on the wall.

Gameplay immersion. Neither the graphics or sound was top of the line at the time, but game feeling was immense... And the grandness of it, it took ages to play through.

The thing that really made me stay and play HL over and over was the awesome story line and back then when i was lil, the game was so long! :D
and i use to use the Glock only, those were the days :)
cant wait for HL2, ill do the same thing but with a usp match

Yeah what I remember the most was HL wouldn't bloody end. It kept on going and going but loved every minute of it.

Valve is saying HL@ is much longer!!!

What struck me most was :

walking around hunted by marines, aliens, and then finding a scared scientist in a room, talking to you, giving you hints....that atmosphere was great :p

I don't care much about the SP part. All the mods for MP was the thing that was fun with HL.

The AI,story,atmospheric..the scripted sequences where aliens fought against marines.....
In MP the Gauss,Bow and Long jump module...this weapons made HLDM very unique compared to other 3dshooter and its still the most inovative
stylisht and deepest MP game for me.

The look of everything as well as the industrial overtones.

I have to say, the first time I played it was in Virgin Megastore in NYC and it was the tram-ride. I just remember seeing that robotic arm with the electricty (which was purty:)) and then when I saw the chrome effects on Barney's helmet I was SOLD. Or "pwned". Whichever you prefer.

The main thing that struck me was the sound. Back in '98, it was the first time I'd played a game with a surround sound setup and a sub-woofer. The sound fx and the dynamic music added so much atmosphere to the game.

Also, I loved all the way that the story kept running in-game without traditional pre-rendered cutscenes. I find normal cutscenes very boring (Mafia is the only game where I have ever sat through all of them without skipping) and the fact that in HL you always felt within these story-building scenes made the story so much stronger.

The story, and the fact that you actually feel as if you are Gordon. I usually love cut scenes in video game, but I absolutely loved how HalfLife implemented gameplay orientated cut scenes. It made you feel as if you was part of the game, instead of just a person controlling the character. You actually felt as if you was the character.
