Beyond the town of Torchlight lies a world shrouded in adventure and mystery. Guardian-warrior Syl appears in a prophetic dream, summoning the player to the Estherian Steppes. There, you meet with the Destroyer and soon venture across the continent of Vilderan, an exotic frontier besieged by forces of evil. A discovery unfolds, that the Alchemist, following his conquest of dark ember, disappeared on his quest to defeat the unknown corrupted force responsible for destroying the mystical race of Estherians. Aided by Syl, the remaining Estherian Guardians, and clues left behind by the missing Alchemist, you will find yourself battling a powerful enemy that threatens to unravel the elements of the entire world.

Neat.

HUGE. Man, and this will be out WAY before Diablo 3 too. Man, that's hilarious. This is some good shit.

I never played the first one. Any good?

It's alright. It should certainly cure your Diablo fix. The first one sorely lacks online though, so co-op in part two is really good news.

If Torchlight was Diablo with modern graphics, then Torchlight 2 is going to be Diablo 2 with modern graphics. The game will feature multiple dungeons with randomly generated overworld maps and four character classes instead of the original game's three. Also, it will finally feature multiplayer! Yes, unlike the original Torchlight, players will now now be able to enjoy some co-op dungeon diving! The game will also feature Torchlight's own flourishes, including item-shlepping pets, fishing, and the TorchEd game editor for producing mods.

Oh wow that sounds far better than the first one.

Torchlight + Multiplayer, that's all I needed to know, everything else is gravy.

absolute must buy. and coming out years before diablo 3, i'm sure.

Day one purchase. If they'd slapped multiplayer on the first game and balanced everything a bit more, I'd probably still be playing it.

Also, mod support? Goddamn, that's gotta be pretty much unprecedented for a multiplayer game like this. Weren't they originally touting it as an MMO?

Bad^Hat, Torchlight was originally claimed to be a test and the game after it would be a full-fledged MMO, I'm guessing they couldn't get the cash together to make that plan reality or something because since Torchlights launch they've been like completely quiet about the MMO project afaik.

Just checked the Runic forum and the devs have indeed been very quiet about the MMO. I asked about it in some Q&A thread, so maybe they'll answer.

Way to link a link that was linked in a link from my link...

And we’re using loot rules that are pretty similar to Mythos where drops are basically your drops. You pick up what you found and you don’t have to fight over loot.
Yes.

That is all.

I was pointed towards this interview on Gamasutra.

The Torchlight MMO -- you said you're still working on it alongside Torchlight II but why not just focus on the MMO first?

There are a couple reasons. I think that we were overwhelmed by the response after Torchlight came out. Everyone said they loved it, and there were generally good reviews, and I think that literally every comment in every review said it would've been better with co-op. The more we thought about it, we could give people what they're asking for, and give them a nice, co-op Torchlight experience a lot faster than we could do an MMO.

So it felt like there was a vacuum there. We decided to do it, because it'd make the MMO better in the long run because we'll have a little more experience with making a multiplayer Torchlight, and it'll give people what they want in the meantime. We kind of ran out of reasons not to do it.

It also seems like a lower-cost way to expand the franchise, and it'd help fund the MMO, correct?

Sure yeah, to the extent we make a profit on it, it'll be going into helping out the MMO, so that's a big part of it. But mainly, the motivation is just giving the players what they want.

Shakermaker, thanks for the link, makes sense I suppose.

Thanks for telling them to add multiplayer, Marko T and Jeff H! :p

Lookin' good.

Looks pretty too... though I might miss the dugeon worlds... I don't know why they didn't just do overland areas anyways considering how much variety they had in the dungeon worlds. Hopefully they have some more enemy variety too... always love new enemies.

That trailer looks great! I love the look of the outdoor areas. It looks like they are adding everything that I thought would make the original even better.

Somehow it reminded me a bit of the first Dungeon Siege. In a good way. I like that it is outside now, although I am quite sure there will be dungeons.
