What's the fastest way to transfer files between two computers over the net? Right now I'm using msn to transfer files, which is very, very slow (2kb/s) , does anyone know of a faster way? I need my friend to send me some 200MB anime clips.

I'd guess BitTorrent or uploading it to some P2P network. If you know the guy in real life, you could just burn it to a CD.

I know the girl in real life, but I hardly ever meet her so she can't burn it to cd for me. Bittorent would be hard because then I would have the create a trackerless torrent and distribute the torrent files, and Bittorent is hardly the fastest around either. So far the only way I can think of would be to give her my ftp password and ask her to upload it to my site and then I'll download from there, I hope I don't exceed my bandwidth allocation though.

Sounds like a good way to do it. Depending on how much control you have over this FTP site, you can set up a public area, or provide her with an account... Obviously you won't want to give away your usual password.

FTP might be a bit of a squeeze though, my hosting account only has 200MB of space, which is about the size of one file.

hehehe, yeah ftp would be the way to go if you could do it.

there *might* be a way for you to set up a vpn, but I think you have to have special software for that

Well, sure, but your FTP site would be easiest... You could have her set up a web or FTP server on her computer and grab the files like that, so that there's only one transfer and it doesn't use your FTP space. Or you could set up an FTP server on your own computer so she can upload directly to you.

Or, if say GMail allowed you to send 200 MB attachments, you could do it like that... I have no idea how much is actually allowed though.

*edit: Looks like GMail's limit is 10 MB, so never mind about that one.. :p

Yeh I agree with psyno, could either get her to set up a webserver on her pc, or you could set up a webserver on your own pc, to which you would either upload/download the files, then you will only need to transfer teh files once instead of twice (what it would be like if you were using your ftp server). You could simply setup a special dir that had login access and write permissions, then just use teh ftp client to upload the files to your own pc. That would be the way I would do it. Hope this helps.

MSN is TERRIBLE for transferring files. I suspect it goes slowly deliberately because "all fiel-sharing is teh 3v0L!!!" New MSN blocks mp3's and all sorts of other files. I somehow managed to use it to send an mp3 through to a friend today and it seems that MSN went and *deleted* it. Very bizarre - that program has become (even more of) an untrustworthy piece of shit.

If FTP is dicey or too much hassle then any other chat client should serve your purpose better than MSN (AIM or whatever...).

IRC is the best way. Just connect to the same network, and DCC files to each other.

Ok I have a problem I can access http://MY_IP_ADDRESS/blabla.txt ftom my own comp, but others can't seem to access it, connection times out. I changed the IP Address Control thing to Deny/Allow, but it still doesn't work.

Are you using Abyss webserver? Are you using a router? If so, you need to forward the following ports:

Protocol: UDP
Internal: 1024
External 1024

Protocol: TCP
Internal: 1024
External 1024

Protocol: TCP
Internal: 9999
External 9999

Also another thing you might want to try is this www.no-ip.com You can setup a DNS redirect for your own IP adress. For example you could have http://somename.no-ip.com which is attached to your current IP adress (which can be dynamically updated using a small application that runs as a service under XP or 2000) so that when someone wants to access your webserver, you simply enter http://somename.no-ip.com which will look up your current IP adress and take you to teh webserver you are running on your computer. I use one and its so convienient and easy to setup too. If you do wish to set one up and are unsure of anything, then just drop me a PM and I will be happy to help.

Why overcomplicate things... just use megaupload.com or yousendit.com

You have a point! Didn't think of those. If you can then I would use YSI. It has a max upload of 1GB and downloads are fast.
