U2 turn down commercial

Just heard that U2 turned down 12million euro for having a song used for a commercial. At first glance you think, thats good - most bands would leap at 12million. My question and first thought was, why not take the 12million and support charities. Wouldnt that be a much better idea seems as Bono is all about saving the world
 
If I was in his spot, I'd have gone for it. Though eventually you may lose those 12 million by people not buying your albums since they think you're greedy bastards.
 
What was the commercial for? If it condoned the killing of adorable baby puppies, then I'm not surprised.
 
It's not like U2 don't associate themselves with commercials. They've probably just run out of room to store their moneybags.
