Where did this term originate from? It seems to have become the widely accepted term for the Combine among the HL2 community, but I've looked (and looked...) and I can't seem to find any in-game reference to that title. The closest I've gotten is this;
But given the context, the way Breen speaks rather poetically in the first place (and especially here, when he's speaking in metaphors), and the fact that I can't seem to find any other in-game mention of the term, leads me to believe that he was just saying "universal union" as a description and not a title.
I'd be happy to be proven wrong, of course; I'm genuinely curious to see if there's something that I'm missing or not. But try as I might, I can't find any other mention of it throughout both HL2 and Ep1.
Perhaps someone else has more light to shed on the issue?
Breen said:In order to be true to our nature, and our destiny, we must aspire to greater things. We have outgrown our cradle. It is futile to cry for mother's milk, when our true sustenance awaits us among the stars. And only the universal union that small minds call 'The Combine' can carry us there.
