Hey guys, my situation is this;

I've just moved from my parents house and into a sweet gaming lair. The place is the bomb, just one big little gripe ... no internet. Yeah that's right, the apartment went stone age on my ass. ;)

Anyways, to the urgent questions!

1. Is Half-life 2 released today on Steam? Or have I missed something?

2. As I want to install Half-life 2 on my computer at home and not this piece of junk that my parents have, how do I proceed?
I have a portable harddrive I would like to use but is that possible?

Just serious answers please ... ;)

1) No. HL2 presales on Steam today. With the preorder you get Counter-Strke Source.

2) You do need to connect to the internet to install HL2. You cannot transfer it via HD, it needs to be activiated on the computer you're using. I guess you'll have to take your rig back to your parents for a day.

How can it be a sweet gaming lair without internet?

Well, you can pourchase HL2 today on Steam. And you have to activate it through Steam, so you need an connection.

Here's what I should do.

1. Order an ISP to your gaming lair.
or
2. Go to your parrents house with your computer for some days, preload hl2, pruchase hl2, wait until the release of hl2, activate hl2 and go back to your lair to play hl2.

3. GL HF ;D

1. No, but you can pre-load it on Steam. Then if you choose to, you can pay money over steam and activate the preload. OR you can buy it from the store, in which case you shouldn't waste your time downloading it.

2. You could pre-load it on your parents computer and copy the GCF files to your own computer and install it from there. But in order to buy it over steam you need to connect to the internet, which you can't do, so you can't do that.

If you buy it retail you can still install it from the GCF files you have and then put in the retail box cd-key. However if you do this, there really isn't -that- much point wasting space on your HD with the GCF files.

As for the thing in the info from valve thread about an internet connection being required to -install- HL2, I think it is bogus. Valve wouldn't be that stupid, and someone mentioned Gabe once saying that Steam has 2 ways of validating HL2:

1. By a valid, legal CD being in the drive or
2. By connecting to the steam servers

In any event, #2 will definately be possible, and I am 99% sure that #1 will be too, but we shall see.

Holy crap, the truth right in my face.

Ignorance is bliss my friend. ;)

Thanks for the replies guys!

I guess you could pre-load the game files at your parents and then put them in the steam folder in your batcave... then once Half Life 2's released you could verify/purchase on steam via dial-up. You have a phone line, right? I heard people used to use that a lot before broadband.

Just hope there's not a huge update ;)
