My friend wants to borrow my HL2 cd's because he bought a cd-key on ebay for 15 bucks and absolutely needs my cd's to install the game... I thought that if you have a cd-key you just need to insert it and hl2 will download for you, doesn't it? Anyone know?

^ If thats not the case, then to answer your question: Yeah, he would need to borrow your CDs just to install it. Of course, thats assuming that it is a real CD-Key.

I don't think you would need cd's if you have a valid cd key.

tell him to at least try to enter the cd-key in the register a product I already own box.

You need to have the CD in when you enter a retail key. Probably so people don't buy it over ebay :P

Like the previous guy said, Steam won't download HL2 if it's a retail key. Why should Valve use up gigabytes of bandwidth to send you the game when you're supposed to have the CDs anyway?

wait a minute, you need the cd to play/install the retail version?

ooh, my 'friend' is in big trouble........

what if the cds are lost?

i am going to kill my so-called "friend"..............

it dosent matter if its a online cd key or retail cd key there all the same kind of key just install with the cds or u can type the key in then wait like 4 or 5 hrs for it to dl

Actually, you're wrong.

Retail keys won't let you download the files. It was thought for a long time that this would work, but it doesn't.

You can download the files with a reatil key, you just have to have CD1 in the first time you enter the key.
