NEW YORK - MTV owner Viacom Inc. sued the popular video-sharing site YouTube and its corporate parent, Google Inc., Tuesday, seeking more than $1 billion in damages on claims of widespread copyright infringement.

Viacom claims that YouTube has displayed nearly 160,000 unauthorized video clips from its cable networks, which also include Comedy Central, VH1 and Nickelodeon.

The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in New York, marks a sharp escalation of long-simmering tensions between Viacom and YouTube and represents the biggest confrontation to date between a major media company and the hugely popular video-sharing site, which Google bought in November for $1.76 billion.

Holy shit.

Title says 6, everywhere else says 1.
Who divided by zero?!!

Everyone in the media business is too much of a control freak.

thought youtube had a disclaimer saying it was all user based and youtube accepts no responsibility?

I was so sick of seeing shit like TV shows on Youtube. They knew very well they weren't allowed to have it on, is someone supposed to be surprised here?

I will love to see the outcome of this result. I honestly don't know what the right moral thing to do is... @_@

Yeah, wrong title monies....I had 6 on my mind for some reason.

LOL.

Google: "So you want us to write you a cheque, or just drive a big truck full of money up to your house?"

Ever since hearing this I have been curious how much money google has, and how much their annual profit is.

Time to go look.

edit:

$3.077 Billion, not as much as I was thinking, but that's still a lot.

Damn, can a mod fix my title, I'm confusing other people...AND ME!

Just doubleclick in the table cell containing your thread title in the Off-Topic thread list. You can edit it from there.

What if Viacom wins their case? Google going down? YouTube going down?

Rofl.

Google? Well no, they can easily afford the $1 billion. However, subsequent cases filed by other victims of copyright infringment could threaten YouTube's existance or popularity (popularity based on the fact that they would likely have to increase screening for uploaded content, thus reducing the appeal of YouTube).

Can't they base their organization in Somalia or something where there's no rule of law?

One does not simple walk into Google, there are lawyers there that do not sleep.
Just buy up sealand and move the servers over there imo

Youtube goes down, another site will have the videos up and take its place

pr0notube lol!

Pfff. This is ridiculous. Viacom are steamed about the fact Google aren't taking the "appropriate measures" to moderate the content of youtube. You can't click your heels together and wish away 160,000 videos.

Viacom: You're hosting videos that we have copyright on!
Google: Have you reported them?

According to Viacom...you can.

The guys in charge of Google are probably regreting now that they bought YouTube.

Or not. They could just buy Viacom too and laugh at them.

"Lawsuit from Viacom came to a screeching halt today when Viacom and Google have announced their merger..."

"Lawsuit from Viacom came to a screeching halt today when Google announces its hostile takeover of Viacom, and then promptly takes over the World"

Fixed

In all seriousness, Google does generate more revenue annually than Viacom does, and twice the annual profit. I would LOVE to see this.

It'd be lol, for sure.

I saw someone speculating wildly that Viacom probably had a bunch of Youtube users uploading their property so they'd have something to sue over. :D D:

Quick! Everyone upload a bunch of Google clips to Viacom for counter-lawsuit D:
