Video Card Help

Ok well I just got a new video car. Its a NVidia GForce FX 5800 ASUS V9900 128MB

I have 512 DDR Ram with a CPU speed of 1.80GHZ AMD 2500+

Well I used ot have the FX 5600 256MB car and everything was working fine.

I installed the new card put in the drivers and everything but I see little sparkles everywhere in the map and weird lines just appear. Also I get about 30 FPS

My setting are DX8 wirh everything at default that is medium.

When i force it to go DX9 the sparkles and stuff go away and everything but then my FPS rops to about 10 - 15 and cant move.
Everything is set the same or the lowest it can go and no diff.

I have the res set at 1280X1024 but also tried 1024X768

Can anyone help me out please.
 
Probably because you are forcing it to DX9 when it should be DX8 is causing the framerate issue. And the FX series kind of sucks a bit, so that might be a part of your original problems.

Did you uninstall your drivers before installing the new ones? Sometimes that makes a difference.

No I mean 5800

Also yes i did uninstall the old drivers before installing the new ones.

Also I had the FX5600 before this one and didnt have any problems. Just that it was not a good card but did what it could do.
 
Well, I probably can't help you man. Sorry. The only thing I can think of, since your 5600 worked alright is maybe your 5800 is blown. It happens, but hope in your case it didn't.
 
with all the the Cards in the world u had to get that one oh dear....
 
Yeah, I have blown many things during my gaming... Wait.

Well it not like I bought it.
I got it from my uncle who got the 6800 and he gave me his old 5800 witch i thought would be better then my 5600.

ok iys loud all bulky I mean real big for all I know and the performance just sux at DX games but stiil I heard with this Programm called 3d analyze that could help u google it
 
ditch that card, nvidia literally stopped makeing them because they suck so hard. STick with yer old 1
 
Aren't sparklies really anomalies caused by overheating? I'd check airflow and the vidcard fan. It could be too much heat is causing the card to throttle down.

edit: also, do this test- reduce your resolution to 640x480 then check framerate. Then increase to next higher resolution and check framerate. Do this until you hit that 1280xwhatever resolution. Does your framerate increase dramatically with a lower res? If so, this means your card is probably working correctly. If not, you have another problem.

I'm assuming you have AA & AF shut off both in the display properties control panel AND the ingame options.

I will try doing that when I get home from school today and post it here.

Also I get this error thing now everytime I load up my pc.

does the card need PSU power? (I know nothing about Nvidia's so) If it does you PSU may not be powerful enough
 
Well ok I think I got it working now. Everything seems to be working fine. I have it on the highet res and almost everything on max but aa I think its off. I get lowest is 450fps to the highest I seen so far witch is 150fps I usually get a constant 70 - 80 fps. I have in DX9 mode and get no sparkles and weird lines now. Runs smooth and everything.

It seems the I need to pug it into my power supply witch I did now know. I did that now and it seems to be fine and not getthing that power message anymore.

Also got one question. What is AA and can i turn it on with the card I have and will it be laggy with it on??

that's a pretty high average for your specs!

AA is Anti-Aliasing, it basically smooths the edges of things, You may as well try it to see how it likes it

it looks muuuch better on
 
Ok I turned it on I put it at 6. I get about now an aveage around 60 - 70 fps now but some times i get lower but also sometimes get higher.

Also what is the other option filter somthing??
 
yeah, i'm finding it difficult to believe your frame rates are that high with your specs!

I've got an x800pro, 1gig of ram and a 3.2Ghz processor and my frame rates are about 50-60 with AA on 4x and everything else highest.
 
Well its the truth I tell ya. I will post a screen if ya dont believe me. I will back back with one in a bit.
 
Well you already have AF set to 16x, so I'd say just keep increasing AA as high as you can until framerate drops too low, then you're set. The image quality looks very nice.

You might want to look into the DX8 water patch, in case the DX9 water doesn't work for you, or is too slow. I run this patch with my GF4 ti 4200 and it looks awesome and framerate isn't hurt much at all.

The 5800 was actually the first card to use GDDR II ram, but then Nvidia ditched that and went to GDDR III for the 6800 series.
Its affectionate name was the "dustbuster" and well deserved that was too, cos at full pelt it sounds like a "hoover".

Anyways..Your card will only go as high as 8X FSAA, A setting of 16X FSAA will just make it default to No FSAA at all.

Try running tests again, but this time everything on max, with 8X FSAA & 8X AF.
I quite sure you will not see the average framerate as 60-70fps then.

With my system on max (playing offline) I get about 40-60fps, It drops to 30-35fps in large firefights.

Playing online, I drop everything to low, And get about 60-100fps.
Eye candy, means nothing, when your getting beaten over the head with a crowbar, because your framerate is below 20, And the game runs like a slideshow.

On a last note, The FX cards are'nt properly supported in HL2 for running under DX9.0.

You will definately see much higher framerate under DX8.1.
To see the difference enter this line into your HL2 short cut properties,
After it says..""C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\Steam.exe" enter a space, followed by -console -mat_dxlevel 81
this will enable the console, and force direct X 8.1.
