Video settings in HL2

If I change the video resolution and the brightness (gamma) in the "Options" menu before a game session the, settings stay until the game is "quit" then revert when next the game is launched.

Does anyone know how to set the video options permanently without reinstalling the game???

Check if your config.cfg (in STEAM\SteamApps\[your-user-nam]\half-life 2\hl2\cfg\) is not set to Read Only.
Also, check the messages in the console (after changing some vid settings), maybe they say something about not being able to store the settings in the configuration file.
