does virtual memory affect performance in games?....a few of my games are choppy....my page file is 1535...i have a gig of ram....should i change it or somethin?

thanks

no not really... at least i don't think it should :|

EDIT: what's your CPU? you GFX card?

hey would another GB of ram make a big difference in games?

answer my questions first and i'll know how to answer that question.

answer what?....you didnt ask me anything....im askin bout virtual memory and your saying it shouldnt...i wrote this to get an answer not like that....that dont help me

whoops my cpu is 3.2 and i have a x850 xt pe pci express video card with 256 ram....games should not run this way

Run the game, pause it press the windows key or alt-tab(i think).

Then run dxdiag.exe.

It tells you how much of the page file is in use, if its maxed out, add another
500Mb.

If your using windowsXP it should tell you the recommended allocation
anyway.

is the page file the virtual memory?....648 was being used....1812 availiable....now my virtual memory is 536....how can i find the recommended allocation for windows xp?

i mean virtual memory was 1536....if thats right it looks ok

Yes it is.

That should be fine.

Right click: My computer, then click Properties then click on the Advanced
tab, in the performance pain click settings. Then click Advanced, in the Virtual
Memory pain Click Change.

The recommended and currently allocated is at the bottom.

Oh yeah one more thing.

If your games are still choppy, Defragment your hard drives.

Yeah don't mess with your vitrual memory. It's perfectly fine how it is. By changing the values you have more of a chance to make worse than better. :D

Think thats why he has'nt posted back yet.....

so you think i should let windows handle the page file?

I read in a perfomance magazine that you should change it.

I have a gig of RAM and 2 GB of virtual mem, none of my games are choppy with the exception of BF2 (the game is virtually unplayable for the first two or three minutes of joining a new map, stutters like hell).

dont let windows manage it, it will take up cpu cycles resizing it, set it to 2048 min 2048 max and leave it liek that,

a page file is sa series of pages whihc get swapped into and out of memory

eg page 1 has all the office parphenalia u have open liek word and access, u leave them open and start up lost coast. it makes a new page for that game and swaps lost coast into the memory and takes page 1 out and sticks it in the page file

thats an example, not totally accurate but that is what it does

What's the optimal amount of virtual memory I should allocate if I have 1GB RAM?
