How come on HL1 they are your enemies, but on HL2 they are your friends?

In Half-Life 1 they are slaves of Nihilanth and attack Earth on his commands. Apparently after Nihilanth's defeat and Combine's invasion, Dr. Eli Vance somehow managed to create friendly ties with the vortigaunts, who knew the Combine of old and recruit them for the resistance's cause.

The full story is unknown and there are lots of blanks, but that's the basic deal.

In HL1 they are slaves to the controllers and by killing Nihilanth you set them free. They now aid the humans because they have no other choice and because after being slaves for so long they hate the concept of slavery and will not bear another minute of it and will not see it done to others.

Of course, they might have some limited form of respect for the humans after one freed them...my take on it anyway has been that after Gordan set them loose they decided to return the favor with the Combine by joining forces with the humans. I mean, they do make a lot of gratitude-bearing statements in your presence.

That they do. Ofcourse in the Vortigaunt camp you see two of them talking in their own language, apologising for their rudeness and promising that they only use it, if they wish to say unflattering things about you. And then they keep on talking forever with the very same language.

I imagine, that they are aiding humans, because if they wouldn't they'd end up back in slavery in a blink, this time to the Combine.

One thing I've wondered, though, is what the Combine thinks about the vortigaunts on Earth. We see one cleaning up the floors in the train station, so apparently at least to some extent they are treated same way as humans. However, every vortigaunt encountered after that is in some resistance encampment (plus a dead one in Nova Prospekt) and we don't see submissive vortigaunt citizens apart from that single one. Are they living in the wild, then?
Also, why aren't they fighting alongside the rebels when the city's uprising starts? They could certainly use the help...

The Vorts whould have other tasks then to be in the front line.
As is the same for the enslaved Vortiguants, the combine whould have them make more complexed task like power up, and engineering stuff.
The Vortiguant in Nova prospect has probably been captured and beaten for information.

The Vortigaunts should be in battle. At least, some should.

Ever fight one? It's one hit kill. If you have G-Mod and the "Notarget" mod by lon3, go into a map and spawn a Vortigaunt, and turn on the "hate" command. They will own your ass.

VortigAUnts. :P

I would've preferred them as enemies - I liked it when in hl1 a dozen would appear at once and you had nowhere to hide. They're kinda boring in hl2, and too intelligent, as well.

I never heard about the 'hate' code before!

Well maybe thats becouse they are being controlled by Nihilanth.
A vortigaunts mind might be to complexed for Nihilanth to control hundreds or thousands at the same time, in an efficient way. So they seem stupid.
