Vorts and Gordon

I was curious......the Vorts tried to kill gordon in HL1, and gordon kills alot of vorts.....now, understandably both sides are being invaded by the combine and need to protect themselves, but why do the vorts help gordon as much? Simply becuase they need eachother to survive?

Gordon freed the remaining Vorts from Nihilanth's mind control. They worship him.
