Want to host own server

heyyy... I wanted to start a clan on Deathmatch, but don't want to pay some money to have someone host a game server for me. I allready have a server at home which is usable. What I want to know is are there any ports in my router I have to open up to host a server? And also, what else is there involved in starting a server? The server would be running 90% for deathmatch and then the other 10% would be for being a file server.

Here is a tutorial I just finished last night detailing how to create your own non-source dedicated server. I will have the Source version complete sometime today, I hope.

The source version is not much different, really. When telling the hldsupdatetool to update your game just choose 'hl2dm' and it will install the source engine. Then use srcds.exe instead of hlds.exe for the shortcut instructions.

You don't have the equipment nor do I think you're willing to pay the MINIMUM 40$ a month for a sufficient server.

Home servers will be laggy with 8 players, a few less, depends on your hardware. For the average low ping cable connection, a 3ghz with 1 gig of ram can keep 4-5 fairly happy, 3 no problem.
