Were video games better before?

.I can not be wrong because the half-life series is getting shorter. Remember the episodic games that just came out and what about heavenly sword?. I would go on but you would probably hate me talking for ever and ever.

Well, Heavenly Sword was just complete shite. AND it was on the PS3, so that basically seals the deal. And no, it's not getting shorter, I, for instance, take about 6 hours to complete one of the episodes. So, Ep.1 and 2 both took 12 hours approx. to complete, about the length of a normal game. If it only takes you 2 hours to complete one of the episodes, you're going to fast. slow down.

The episodes are supposed to be shorter! That's why they're called episodes! That's why the come out so frequently!! It doesn't mean they got any worse!

Would you like me to say that in a language you understand?

EPISODES are SUPPOSES to be SHORT! THEY FINE ARE!

Look, The reason HalfLife2: EP1,2 were both short iss because the meant it to be so. You get short doses of all our favorite drugs at lower prices and short waiting periods! Woo!
Also you suck at spelling and grammar. kthxbye
Wow, look who is talking MR SPELLING BEE. I got more.

LOL

Games are gettin longer, Doom 3=forever, half life 2 = never ending, mmm for example the GTA games WOW etc... UR WRONG
The halo series single player, Uncharted: drakes fortune...HALF LIFE the crapisodic series continues... I got you buddy!.

I agree, maybe not the games getting shorter, but 'someone's' boredom factor getting higher...
THANK YOU!!!, HOLY MOTHER OF GOD!!!... but am I boring?.

games are getting much more expensive. Where it used to be that you could make a game with 10 people in a couple of months now it takes dozens of people and years or decades *cough*fallout 3*cough* to make. And that leads to changes in the industry so if your looking for that old timey feeling too bad because it's never coming back.
AHAW MAN!, I MISS DEM DANG OL GOOD OL DAYS WHEN COMMON SENSE IN THE INDUSTRY WAS FUN TO HAVE!!!. That was a joke of course. I am NOT a REDNECK!!!.

I've finished Resident Evil 4, GTA:San Andreas, as well as Half-Life 2 (not to mention Eps 1 and 2) and think that there is Plenty of Gameplay on all of these. Valve has been doing Episodic Content to release material in a faster time than an entire game, so yeah, they do play faster, but it beats waiting many years for the one game.
Look, I hate to be a stickler when it comes to video games... although it may be too late for that but yes you are right. I love videogames as much as ANYBODY... come and test me but quite frankly I just HATE the way valve has sold there gaming soul to the DOLLAR... sorry bud.

Video games have gone downhill after the millenum. The first probelm is that video games are being shorten in length. It may not seem like a big deal but lets debate and I can prove to you why you should be concered and PLEASE PLEASE if I am fortune enough to get any replys be patenice. I will RESPONED once again if you reply I WILL RESPOND PLEASE BE PATENICE I WILL RESPONDES IT WILL TAKE ME A COUPLE OF DAYS. THANK YOU.
Thanks. I will repent of my sins

I hope you didn't spell that wrong on purpose...

Do you not have any originality of your own... go pick a better username.

If you're referring to the Episodes... they're all equivalent to one game. If anything, games have been getting longer.

Sure, Half-Life was uber long and uber everything, but if you examine Opposing Force and Blue Shift after that, they were both pre-millenium, and yet they weren't exactly long.

If you're going to say something like "YEAH, BUT MARIO WAST RELLY LONG LOL" then you might want to think again, because you're comparing two totally different Genres. There were games like Blobby and Willy that weren't particularly long, especially considering the technology behind them.

I AM PATIETLY WETTING YOUR RESPONDES
Wow. You would rather criticize MY MISSPELLINGS than accept the butt kicking my message dealt to you? but look at this  Isnt he charming?. He is called smiley. He makes fun of misspelling hypocrites like YOU!... smile you have just been dissed Yo!.

ISS?... I could crack a joke but you STILL woulnt get it.

I think games are decreasing in quality, though not all games. Just look at the differences between Morrowind and Oblivion.
Good point but I have too many morons to embarrass to talk to you. Thanks anyway!.

oblivion rocked balls don't talk smack.
Who mention oblivion?.... I said games!.

Why can't you ever stop... it hurts me so much... so tired... of hitting "merge posts".

what's with this guy
double posting, ignoring mods, posting rambling posts, insulting long time members...
please ease up if you intend to stay

If you really think video games have gone downhill play bishock it will restore your faith immediately.

"would you kindly" still gives me chills.
Why me GOD?. WHY ME!!!. Buddy you wanted this not me. Bioshock is a half baked, watered down, like a dumb blonde version of SYSTEM SHOCK FOR P.C!!! but hey maybe I should say alien 2... it is MUCH BETTER THAN THE ORIGINAL!.

No, I critisized your spelling, then went on to serve the ball back to you. But it appears you didn't bother to read the rest of my post. At which point *shrugs* I win the argument by default.

Hypocrites are people who tell people to do something and fail to do it themselves.
I hope you realise that, because I actually try to spell things right. If you can find a mistake in my post, then I'll probably accept that to an extent. You, on the other hand, are lazy, excessive, AND DON'T SEEM TO UNDERSTAND capITALS. Puncation for that matter, either!.

Don't bother laughing at me, I'm just going to hit you.

No matter what Valve does, you will still exist. By you I mean some irritating, irrational, simple minded, spelling bee loser who plays an incredible game and only thinks "OMFG, only 5 hours!? How could they?".

Valve has to decide whether want to hear a group of idiots complaining about the game length or about the game wait. The episodes are great, they are in no way lacking in quality, but since it's only a fraction of a normal length game it some how sucks? We're playing HL3 here, we're just playing it in 3 seperate parts.

By the time Episode 3 is made, we'll, mostly likely, have a more cost effective, longer, better looking, and generally improved game over HL2.

Think of it like this, it's Halflife 2 all over again, only now, they released it a few chapters at a time, much earlier.
Yes... 3, 3 ways to bankrupt your business, 2 dollars made in game sales... and 1 IDIOTIC FANBOY LIKE YOU..PRICELESS.

First of all, regarding length: The Half-life 2 episodes were designed with that very aim, shorter episodes, lower price, shorter development time. It's a conscious choice by the developers to bring a small but shining game, polished to perfection (or in your analogy, a small baby boy that will only live until he's 20 but with a huge penis). It's a tradeoff, and in VALVe's case I think it's well worth it. And computer games are not getting shorter, many examples have already been mentioned.
Second: The FPS singleplayer genre is far from dead. FEAR, Half-life 2, Bioshock, Portal, Call of Duty 4 etc etc.

Oh yeah and I fixed up your triple-post suite a little and changed your topic to something more easily digested by the forum layout.
WHY WOULD ANY REAL DEVELOMENT TEAM WANT A SMALL... ANY TYPE OF GAME?.You put everyting... and I mean EVERYTING into the making of your games or like I said before. Why even make games?.

No idea what you're trying to say. I might've critisized someone else for not using capitals... but um... I think you went a bit too far.

All I seem to get is "if video games went under a normal life cycle"... as if the people who create the games (Valve) didn't follow standard/older techniques for doing this... If anything, the life cycle of a computer game has increased by far, and the speed of development quickened.

Could you summarize your point...? Oh, and go read some books. It might can helpful to grammar without.
OMG... You CANT be a REAL gamer.

That makes you the only person on the earth who thinks so.
No... that makes you the only person who DOESNT THINK SO.

Okay, I'm getting very tempted to close this thread down. To begin with, you actually seemed semi-sensible, and you did mostly stick to your promise of answering every post. But now you're getting abusive, you're calling people names and you keep double-posting. I wish I could say all these reasons were enough, but the fact is that what ticks me off most is that YOU KEEP IGNORING ME.

The edit button is easily accessable at the bottom of all your posts. Now,

STOP ****ING DOUBLE-POSTING OR THIS THREAD ENDS.

Now, as a response to your answer to my post: Have you ever heard of short films? TV episodes as opposed of feature-length movies? Some game makers may feel that their story, their setting and yes, their development process is better suited for an episodic game format. Case in point; The new Sam & Max adventure games are probably the best example of episodic format. Not only does it allow for a gradual telling of a story much like a TV show, but by the time Episode 3 was in progress, developers were able to correct those mistakes their fans felt they had made in episode 1 & 2 and thus the following episodes were greatly improved, all at a very low price and extremely short intervals between episodes.

Utter rubbish. Timeshift, Haze, Bioshock, EP2, Crysis, Call of Duty all came out recently and mostly focus on the singleplayer levels, which have mostly recieved positive reviews. NEXT.
Is that all you can think of when comparing that to the BILLIONS OF GAMES EVER MADE?.NEXT.

OMG... You CANT be a REAL gamer.

What the hell?? What does your lack of spelling and punctuation have to do with me not gaming? Just because I understand the life cycle of a computer game? And because people actually put FUCKING EFFORT INTO THEIR GAMES?

Oh... and don't insult me like that, ever again.

I think the biggest issue, is that there really hasn't been a new "genre" out.

Westwood more or less invented the RTS. Then more RTS games came out based on its principals.

ID made the first person shooter really popular with Doom. It's the most widely played type of game I'd assume, and for a long while all shooters where doom clones. It's getting better now, but they bring in gameplay elements and graphics but neglect other things like story.

It's pretty hard making a new game based on a genre. It's even harder to make a good game based on that genre.

You have any idea how hard it is to create a new genre? Nigh impossible. Now attempt to create a good one!

Yep, that's the problem :|

Yeah, video games tend to follow the leader. This does not mean that the resultant gameplay can be bad; look at C&C3, which, while not original, is polished to a glimmering sheem.

Since I really have no idea what the hell "halflife" is babbling about (I'm assuming something about length,) I'll just say that I enoy expansion pack based games, and they're often quite commercially successful. Look at the Dawn of War stand-alone expansions, for instance. Dark Crusade was one of the better RTSs of 2006, and they're going to release another one next year. People like having new things, which are actually old things polished up.

While monolithic giant-ass games are nice and all, more and more developers seem to be going for a limited episodic release (via the aforementioned expansions). Even Supreme Commander is going to have expansions before the sequel comes out.

And don't forget that without episodic development, we wouldn't have the seminal Portal. Think about that. No Portal.

Who the **** do you thing you are?

Why have you crawled here to post repeatably while not making a single useful or constructive point?

Every post you have made has been utterly devoid of any factual evidence or indeed of an opinion that isn't mindlessly spewing rubbish.

If you intend to stay:

Learn to use the forum, for a start - stop double posting.

Second, sort out your typing. You're on an english speaking forum, try actually using the language with some semblence of intelligence.

If you want a question answered, you ask it and wait for an answer. After this, don't argue with the person that gave you the answer, pretty much everyone on this forum knows more than you do.

These are examples of how not to talk on the internet, ladies and gentlemen.
You evidently have no knowledge on any of the subjects you cover (Business, game development etc etc)
Utter lack of business knowledge and a big mouth just not make your points any less retarded.

Haha!

To be quite honest, I felt CnC3 was the worst one of the trilogy.

Afterwards? Westwood just continued to churn out unoriginality. None of them have/had the same effect and enjoyability as the first few. Sure, there were a few more additions, some new features, better graphics and the like, but it was still the same game at its core.

I beg to differ. Red Alert 2 and Generals had excellent gameplay, and much better units than TS.

Giant mind-controlled squids are much more fun to use than silly AT-AT mammoths.
