Go to Files and then go to the Source video, watch it.
When you see the alien thingy at the end, it looks so cool! Its so shiny and mucusy and stuff, but I dont see that effect on the recent pics of HL2, Is this just to demonstrate source lighting and reflections or will this cool effect be in the final game?

Won't be ingame, it's called HDR, High Dynamic Range (lighting).

Didn't they say just a little while ago that HDR was still in?

Actully, the shiny floor was due to specular effects, that WILL be in the game and is NOT part of HDR.

it will be in, you can see this at the e3 2003 docks video (zombie head, blood)

lol WHY did they take HDR out? modern mashines CAN handle it! STUPID! can the engine do it or is it completely out?

lol normal simple specular effects != HDR

Stupid, eh?

Did you try out the HDR demo - it barely gives playable framerates to the x800 and 6800 at 1024 x 768 according to a person who took benchmarks for the HDR demo. Having it work with 9800 pro and XT and you get like 27 FPS.

The more complex models, the more it eats up your FPS, as we've seen.

It will eventually be available in a patch or be turn on/off feature.

Yeah, but it's the HDR that makes it seem more real.

Anyway, the point is HDR is in the game...lol... I hate how these bloody rumours start from nothing...

One time... ONE TIME someone said "IF for some reason it's not in at release, it will be added soon after"

And what do we get? "Oh nooess, no HDR!" for the next 4 months.

And then they actually say something solid like : HDR IS IN HL2

Why? Why have you forsaken me?

isnt, when you step out of a dark room and the screen goes real bright for a second then back to normal(in the korean cs:s videos) part of HDR?

Yes, the Korean cs:s videos had HDR. But they were running on a X800.

Like I said - it's most probably a turn on/off feature.

EEK
edit: i would even play on 320x240 for HDR ^^
where can i find hdr demos? i just tested the ati demo with HDR and it ran perfectly

The Antlion guard keeps his armor waxed. ;)

Still am wowed by those effects.

That vid was also a demonstration of higher-quality normal mapping, wasn't it? A bit like the stuff seen in the latest screenie, the one with the wonderfully bumpy antlions...

Yup, there was MUCH more detail on those most recent antlions... odd colour scheme as has been discussed before, but they bumpiness was great...

The thing about HL2 graphics is that they look so real you forget to be wowed... you just accept them because they are so believable.

Like there is nothing wow about seeing a street in real life, so there is nothing wow about seeing a street in HL2 until you pull yourself up and realise it's a game ^^

That's how I feel anyway :)

Yeah RTHDRIBL is not exactly Source HDR. Source just uses bloom and possible glare effects, this one also uses DoF. Try turning it off and your fps will rise. The overall rendering quality is also higher and afaik HL2 doesn't use HDRI which might slow it down too. Try turning off the features that Source doesn't use and I get 150 fps on a 9800 Pro.

cant someone just make a thread with full explenation of HDR?
So that we can point all thise people that are going to ask about it to it.

Or provide a link

It's been explained before. Repeatedly. I reckon they should make a sticky...

What is a Biozeminade?

Anyways, thanks for your help. I doubt I will get a comfortable fps rating with a geforce 440 4go (Laptop, wouldnt you know)

But thanks anyways.
