What if the reason for the new species of aliens( Ant-lions, ect.) were the result of a planned sabotage from the combine, to get the support of the humans... maybe the combine soldiers are volunteers or something? I dunno I may be rambling but just all the new alien species excites and confuses me...

I don't know if the combine would be busy trying to look good while also acting all KGB towards some people, and flat-out killing the rebels.

Still, the idea that they might have engineered the invasion in order to rise to power under the guise of being 'protectors' is intriguing, to say the least. I'd say it's as good a guess as any out there.

the big mystery is going to be how the combine possibly came to earth/took over and what relation it bears to the original black mesa incident.
