What to do in first arena HL2 LC

what is the solution to the first arena? Please tell me so i can look incredibly stupid. I must be getting old.

Edit: theres a little alleyway at the side of the church, go down it and through the wooden doors.

yes

when you just after coming up the mountain, you go through the door and there are the church doors but they will not open. i assume there is something with the large gate by the scaffold, but WHAT!

Have you tried 'use' on the doors? The puzzle is inside of the church, has nothing to do with the scaffolding.

I have to admit that got me too for a good 5 minutes...the problem was I couldn't see the freakin door handle...so I didn't think it was openable, I assumed it was blocked by something and I had to go around...
The gun puzzle took me about 1.3 seconds to figure out though lol
