now in most fps we cant see our legs or arms unless they are holding a gun or we are kicking well in hl2 when we look down will we see gordons legs

Its not that it isnt posible to do. A very old game i played did that. Its just that valve felt its better to not see your legs. (I agree)

I think VALVe might have done this if they had the time and resources to devote to making it look realistic (read: not crappy).. but it just was not a high enough priority. So think of it this way, instead of seeing your body, the rest of the game is that much better..

I hope it becomes the standard in the future however. I hate that "etherial" feeling.

i think it would be cool if you could trip on objects in a game, then have to get up

play KILLZONE for the PS2, just came out last week, feels like the PS2's answer to HALO, somewhat similar gameplay, but i digress, in it you can see your arms, and when you melee attack an enemy, reload, climb up or downstairs, ropes, ladders, mount a MG or an AA gun, hop over something or crawl under something, or throw grenades, it looks SO REAL! the camera bobs all over the place where your head would go in each situation and the animations of your hands clubbing someone over the head with your rifle is just nmatched by anythng else i've ever seen.

seriously check out KILLZONE, rent it or something, just to see this feature and how even with sub-par console GFX you can FEEL your character, not since half-life one have i "felt" like the character who'se gun i'm toting. check it!

Ive thought of this, myself. But this leads into a far more difficult connumdrum; controlling your character through his legs/feet, instead of just moving and having the legs 'act' like they're working (which is how all games work). You could then go as far as giving your character his own dexterity, doing his best to climb stairs, jump on boxes, etc, and sometimes failing/falling, just to get back up.

This would require an enourmous amount of dev time, and I would think a fair amount of additional CPU power.

But it would revolutionize the way games feel, making it much more realistic, and really is an inevitability of evolution.

You got me all wrong

i dont really wanna make this a fps/Rpg i just wanna see my lags they have a unified theory of pyshics i think i should be alloud to see my own legs in game

You're not entitled. I've already explained why you wont.

The problem is not so much one of CPU power or dev time, more a problem of 'how do you control your character'. Already the character uses a simplified physics model (can you strafe?) to make things more fun - and that's not because the movements can't be simulated. Even if it could be done, it'd be horrible to control and probably not as cool as it sounds.

I've always wanted something similar for soccer games though :)

ok once again

you do not get dex and str and all that crap in fps fluke that would be a rpg/fps mix of some sort and i dont care about how that affects it i just wanna see the legs all this stuff about tripping and dexterity should go into another thread

I'm certain its a combination of both. I do think it would be a huge challenge to get a character moving on his own two feet. I also think it would be a huge challenge to make it feel fun instead of f'n annoying. The key here I believe is getting it to be totally natural. In real life you can move all sorts of ways that you can't in games, so we're not talking less controll here.. and you can certainly sidestep in real life.

I dont mean a dexterity raiting. I mean real simulated dexterity; the ability to be dexterous in walking/running/jumping. This is a far cry from the RPG meaning of the word.
