What's HDR?

http://www.daionet.gr.jp/~masa/rthdribl/index.html

In computer graphics and cinematography, high dynamic range imaging (HDRI for short) is a set of techniques that allow a far greater dynamic range of exposures than normal digital imaging techniques. The intention is to accurately represent the wide range of intensity levels found in real scenes, ranging from direct sunlight to the deepest shadows.

There's a neat program here that shows off HDR and what it is.

Click the link, there's a whole bunch of screens. :P

there are pictures on the link but i am guessing that it would look much better if it were moving

UPDATE: Damn It lookes fukin great in motion. just download it it is well worth it

the only problem i can think of is that it eats up all my power. In the ball demo i had 40 FPS with a AMD 64 3000+, Nvidia 6800 and 1 GB of corsair XMS PC-4000. I hope HL2 is more efficent than that program.

Well, that program is not only doing HDR, but alos depth of feild, frenzel, and a junkload of other effects.

It allso has lotsa weird glow types (press g) materials (m and M) and other things.

Hl2's should not only be more simple, but also less intensive, may be calculated at 1/4 screen resolution, done less precisley, etc.

I think it has to do with shiny-ness and glare.

Like if you stare at a black wall then turn around really qucik and look at a light source, your eyes will freak out and then reajust... simulating this effect or something.

(they fake it in hl2 when you are coming out of those tunnels)

Um...?

Ok, how do you use this rthdribl program? All I see is a blank white screen. I tried rotating (L) and loading a new scene. It's still white...

Yes, I'm aware of the system reqs. I have a GeForce 5900 Ultra, 3GHz and 1 gig of ram...so, any other suggestions?

Edit: nm, I figured it out. I had to lower exposure. :smoking:

is there any in game HL2 video preview of what this looks like?

Yep, that's the Source HDR demo (not HL2 although it obviously shares content with the game) - notice that it's a Bink video, not a running executable.

Xpert: Like said before, HDR is not directly about the lighting. Read the thread and avoid looking like a dumbass :)

The_Monkey: The difference could be a lot bigger (more high res textures, better normal maps, highpoly objects etc.) but since the content is obviously taken from some HL2 alpha build (there's even constantly operating simple citadel in the back) there isn't that much difference. It could be possible to show us a nice forest with swaying grass as Source HDR demo though, VALVe just didn't spend extra devtime to do that.
