whats up with the lack of gore?

...so it doesnt seem like a cool idea to go shoot up a school to see the gibbing.

But you could argue the other way.

If there were realistic "gore" in Half-Life 2, no-one would get the urge to see what it really looked like.

Actually most of the time when I shotgun antlions they just went limp and died...Only the workers exploded~
But I do agree when they DO explode the fragments look really fake and it's too dry, making it look like a machine just exploded.

EXACTLY, i would have much rather seen them all just go ragdoll and some blood spray out like usual rather than freakin explode.

honestly,if a shotgun is put against a soldiers head and fired, there would no longer be a head
also,if a person get stepped on by a strider, the leg would probably impale that person
the game has such realistic physics, why are gruesome deaths not gruesome?

Not going to happen. If there was blood and gore everywhere they'd have to give the game an 18 certificate (or whatever the adult rating is in your part of the world). This would limit it's potential audience i.e. no kids. And since most of the posters around here seem to be underage I'd say that was a serious limitation.

Kids who are below 15. (I was one of them until last year)

Well, gibbing by individual body parts is definitely possible in Source. Like shooting off a guy's arm or leg. And if hit by a grenade they can gib with ragdolls on the individual parts. Forgot which mod was this... maybe a long time ago. (Smod? Substance?)

Or maybe I'm suffering from recontructed memory issues.

And the original HL definitely had giblets. that bounced all funny.

Individual body parts blasing off in Source isn't easy to do because, as far as I know, you have to make a model for every limb missing. ie, you'll have to make a model missing a right arm, a left arm, a head etc for each different humanoid npc. The resouces needed just build up and up.

You're right about that, but it's definitely been done before. Dystopia did that, but the range of models was more limited. You could chop a guy in half or blow off his head with a beam gun or something. It's hardly impossible, but it's a large task to do with HL2's range of enemies and friendlies.

They did that in Dark Messiah.
