What's with the walls?

I was reading Rasing Teh Bar today when a seemingly simple and yet unanswerable question came to my simple mind : what's with the combine walls? Why are they spreading all the time?

the combine walls dont make sense, if they were expanding then the wall circumfrence would be constantly getting bigger, this would mean the wall pieces dont fit together and they would have to add in more wall peices or their would be huge gaps in the wall.
