I saw this on HalfLifeRadio's site today...

Valve will be unable to release HL2 by Steam until the official VUG release date, though those who have preloaded it will be able to play right away. Gold or not, we don't expect this mess to be untangled anytime soon

Is that saying that once it goes gold... Valve will be able to put it out on Steam? Or whats it saying? Cause Ithought with the agreement VAlve was not allowed to release it till it hit store shelves

I wouldn't trust anything HLradio says

It's saying Valve can't release on Steam until it's released in retail stores.

HLRadio is about as reliable as a CIA analyst report nowadays.

Just read the first part "Valve will be unable to release HL2 by Steam until the official VUG release date"

That gives you all the info you require.

yea Baal thats what Ithought, but then it says that Steam preloaders would be able to play it right away.. and yea I dont' really trust HLRadio anymore.. it takes them FOREVER to post... but I was confusd

Play it as soon as it's released. Going 'gold' is not being released.

You can only play hl2 once it has been released!!
hope it's soon

well i have heard something about this being true and it makes sense.

What an entirely self-contradictory statement by HLR.

Fact: After HL2 goes Gold, you will be unable to play it via Steam until the day it has its retail release, irrespective of whether you have preloaded it or not.

Dont think its self contradictory, just badly worded. They should have replaced though with and.

i had to read that quote about 7 times before i understood it

Of course it's self-contradictory. It's the equivalent of saying:

"You will be able to play it when it goes gold. You won't actually be able to play it when it goes gold"

"those who have preloaded it will be able to play right away [on the release date]"
I think thats what they mean. Otherwise it wouldnt even make sense.

on what i think is a more important note: we know that steam users r allowed to play the game the moment its released in the shops. say if it's supposed to be released day x, obviously people on the eastern side of our beloved Earth would start day x before people on the western side. so who's clock determines zero hour? can we in England say play the game on the first hour of day x for example, or does every one has to wait till it's officially out in the states? which would suck by the way :P

it would most likely be released at the same time all around the world

I don't think anyones actually asked VALVe, why don't you?
The general suspicion is that it'll be VALVe time. That's PST isn't it?

I'd imagine it'd be 12am on release day Valve time. Which is roughly around 6am UK time I think. So if you've ordered from Steam, you still should get it a few hours early than the shops.

Why did Valve agree to this? I think that once the game is gold then Valve should be able to release it over Steam whenever they please.

Because then VUG would make very little money, as everyone would be buying it over steam. I think it was more that VUG wouldn't agree to it any other way.

Why didn't they find a different game publisher? There are probably over 50 out there...

yea when I was first started to get into HL2 I stayed tuned to HLR all the time and thought it was the best.. then I found this site.. and now I honestly think I could do a better job then HLR... even when Ias a n00b I could have been better... course all of you probobly tihnk I am a n00b :-/

I think IMHO it would definitely suck if HL2 got the CS:CZ treatment (saying they've "gone gold" back as far as October-November 2003, and finally didn't get released until March 2004) when they say it's gone gold.

they signed a contract
and i think that this is the last game that they can test
i also think that someone said they are switching to activision

Activision??? That would suck... I'm sorry but I don't really like them... I mean I like THPS and THUG games... but I don't really like Activison.. for some reason I have a grduge against them
