Ok, in all the debate after the whole gabe email thingy I've heard one issue come up quite often. Here is just one example of the many instances i've seen it.
Why in the world do you think Valve is letting Mod creators charge people to play their mods in the up and coming version of Steam if they want to?
where in that email or ever, did gabe or valve say that they have some new way of letting mod creators charge people to play their mods? I don't recall reading that. He said that with a subscription you get extra expansions and valve created content. I was imagining the HL2 equivalent of op4 and blueshift.

yes its the hottest thing from valve called STEAM.. its a broadband friendly program that lets you pay a montly fee even if you can just get your lazy ass to a store

It's been known for some time that Steam will allow Mod makers to charge for their mod. It's not a new thing. It's up to the mod team and a lot of them probably won't charge.

And you are right about the subscription thing, you'll get expansion packs with the subscription.

I believe its in the valve info thread, or in an interview that Gabe has mentioned that Mod authors can now allow people to buy the mods through Steam if the mod team wants to go commercial with it.

Not in that email. Talked about long before. I don't have a link for you but they've said that mod teams would be allowed to distribute content via steam and charge for it if they so desired.

yeah, but nowhere did i hear that there's some magical toggle button on steam that mod creators can switch on or off saying that all people must pay directly to them 20 bucks to get their mod.

What are you trying to say? That is doesnt matter if Valve said mod teams can charge until they add a magical button that mod teams can switch on and off? Does that make any sense to you? LoL

Yea, but you can also get up and goto the store and get any other expansion packs that will be released with the game. They're not going to release an expansion pack just for people who are subscribed to Steam.

So if the mods are charging money do they get 100% profits? Or does valve take a cut for their steam service?

Of course Valve gets a cut. It's their subscription service, their delivery service, their bandwidth, etc.

I definetly believe ppl got the PS2 rumor from IGNPC.
IGN: Gabe, can you clear this for once and for all? Is Half-Life 2 gonna be on PS2?
Gabe: No, it will definetly not
IGN: WHAT? IT's ON PS2? TELL THE PEOPLE!!!!@!212122@!!!

I don't know about this, but I do know that whenever we make a really good mod, Valve gets an increase in sales for their game because of people who want to play the new mods. (Natural-Selection being the most recent mod to do such a thing) So perhaps they wont need to get a percentage after all.
