Which packagae should I buy?

I can't decide whether to buy
the retail (boxed) HL2 or the Steam Bronze version....
AFAIK, both package include the same games,
and require online registration.

My questions are:
1. If I buy the boxed , do I have to have the CD-rom in the drive every time I want to play?

2. Why does Bronze cost $14 more than boxed ($36 at Wal-Mart)? This seems backwards!

Silver is the best package IMO, also gives you access to the old classics.
