Gabe said way before September 30th that he had enjoyed playing DM for HL2. They were probably working on it but put it on hold to get the single-player done. Since it went gold they could finish working on DM and release it to us.

I voted "who cares" (cause I don't really ), but it was probably released now becasue it was just recently created. Think about it- a few months ago Valve was saying that they have no plans to make HL2DM, and now they release it? Obviously Vavle changed their minds shortly before (or after) HL2's release.
