why cant i play HL2 offline!

okay just installed HL2, right it did run, but on 1024*768 res it crashed but my pc is slow, getting upgrarded within week, however the game does run fine on low res, however after restarting machine, hl2 goes to steam, tries to connect then goes, sorry could not connect to steam, do you wish to retry or start offline, click on start offline and nothing happens.

Im sorry but if this is the way pc games are going ill gert an x-box now, this verification and online process beggars belief! i feel a strongly worded letter to pc gamer to vent frustrations comingon?

Anyways, when you log on to steam even before that, you have to uncheck "don't save my account" and at login, u should check "remember password". Then you can play offline. Enjoy )

you need to diconnect your internet cable, or disable your network, then restart steam and it should ask you if you want to play in offline mode...

where do i do this, do i click the icon on taskbar it comes up with selection screen, i have found the "dont save account bit" but i am still a bit stuck, sorry fo asking propably noob style questions but i dont play a lot of online games, simply due to cost, and the literature on what to do is coming up a little short from Valve!

something about write protecting client_registry.blob after you've been fully updated and your playing the game.. (play game, alt+tab out, find file, right click>properties>read only)

if it breaks somehting, simply un write protect it. by unchecking it.

also doing what phatxuiq said is a good plus...

its not so much a matter of knowing comp stuff i just dont understand why i have to through all of this just to play a game i have waited some time for, I mean im buiolding my own pC next year!, it just doesn't seem to give me the option.

It just goes "connecting steam (im offline at this pooint) couldn't connect try blah blah, click on button to work offline mode, nothing happens its a bit odd! considering it took an hour to get downloaded and installed..... an hour!!

you see this is why i will always love the PC over consoles.

My pc has now decided that it was wrong and that playing HL2 offline is okay after all, hmmm, i dont like it when problems suddenly vanish, it usually means its hiding, oh well only a few days till i get my 512 MB upgrade and couiple months till i get my GeForce 6800GT mmmmm, high frame rates, cheers for advise all, its alive aaalaiiivve
