why cant I?

I was haveing some probelms with my steam program so i decided to uninstall it and reinstall it. I did the necessary procedures to uninstall it, restared my computer and put in the first disk for Half life 2. When i installed it the fist time i was required to install steam first so i thought it would do the same again. However all it did was open put the auto run page where it asks you if you want to play HL2, modify HL2 intallation...etc... how do I only install steam with out uninstalling and reinstalling HL2, CS:S, HL2 DM... ??

Are you sure the entire Steam folder has been deleted? (Standard location = C:\Program Files\)
Also, you could try downloading and running the Steam download from www.Steampowered.com : Link

I did this but now i have to reinstall halflife... what ever... i really just keep comeing upon the problem that my steam program keeps disapearing. its there but its almost like its transparent, its running but you cant get to it. I've had this probelm once before....

Isn't the tray icon (a piece of white chain on a black background) visible in the system tray? (The row with program icons in the bottom right corner of the screen)
