Hi, I'm new to this forum. Love HL2, a question that nags me though is why in the first level (point insertion) when you are in the apartment block do the combine suddenly start chasing you, there doesn't seem to be any reason for it, unless it was something to do with those scanners 'recoginising' you. the announcer woman says something about a 'miscount detected' have I missed something?

you got it. They noticed a miscount in the block and I'd imagine the combine then recieved the orders to pacify the people there so it could be determined who was the intruder.

Clearly, the Civil Protection units have some means of counting the number of people in a building (and some idea of how many people should be in the building). Because you were in the building, they detected an extra person there, who they assumed obviously had no reason to be there (remember, they had locked down this area for an inspection)... so, they came in to arrest you.

omgwtf!!!!~, its metropolice not combine *rollseyes* :P, yeah they go after you cause of a miscount or something

DAY LATE AND A DOLLAR SHORT ASSHOLE

Thanks for clearing it up guys. I'm not sure whether I buy that they could detect the amount of people in the tenement block with a machine but it does seem like the only answer. I first thought someone had tipped them off as to Gordon's location and was waiting for it to come up again but it didn't so I just assumed they didn't like ginger haired folk

remember when Barney let you out the back door of that room? thats why :)

omgwtfjeejee! they are metrocops, not metropolice

Whether it was because of a miscount, or just standard combine procedure, they were conducting a raid of some sort and Gordon was resisting arrest.

omgwtflolfirehydrant! Actually, accoring to Valve Hammer and the model viewer they are metropolice.

Well first you transported to breens office for a second and that put him on alert. So they are already looking for someone who looks like Gordon Freeman. Now with the miscount in the block they raid that apartment for obvious reasons.

yes, but You transported to Breen's office AFTER visiting that apartment. :p
so that couldn't be something that triggered the metrocops for pursuing Gordon.
I think that Breen was aware of Gordon's arrival to City 17, but wasn't sure when would that happen. so when there was some unlisted citizen roaming free through the city it could alert Breen to think that it was Gordon.
so scanners took pictures, they matched Gordons profile and metrocops started chasing him....

I doubt that Breen would have known about Gordon until he appeared in his office. I honestly doubt that Breen would really bother with identifying every citizen that enters the city.

I guess they randomly arrest and kill people for no reason until the human population is extincted. You and the people in the apartment were the just happen to be the lucky ones.

whatever , they are just a bunch of combine lackies

They were already controlling buildings when you came from the station. Remember the two police at the door and those in the alley arresting someone? They were already there because they decided to come and arrest some or maybe bring them to citadel and make them into stalkers. Gordon just happened to be in the middle of it.
