why does it take a long time to load the game

when loading the game it takes a few minutes to connect, allot of the time it then has to verify the files which the takes over 10 minutes, then when the game finally opens takes like another 10 to finally load in.
Must be someway to make it quicker once the game loads i cant really be bothered to play the game with all that waiting.

Decrease your texture detail setting - a lot of the time for loading a level will be that, although i have a geforce3 and most levels only take about 2 mins to load

Addint "-console" to the launch peramiters will disable the animated menu, cutting down on a lot of loading time. Still, 10 minutes is very excessive. Perhaps you need a faster HD/bus/cpu.

i have min specs

duron 1.3
512 ram
and geforce 4 mx 460

i have other games that require the same and they run just fine
i probable understand the loading when going to new areas but whats with the whole connecting the verifying files everytime thats just pointless.

It shouldnt be doing that. You should be able to load steam and launch HL2 without delay

yeah mine starts to validate files sometimes aswell...I ahven't figured out the pattern for it yet...sometimes it launches without any problem, then the nest it needs to validate(I think maybe it does after I've been playing offline mode but I'm not sure)

ive only reformatted my harddrive couple weeks ago ive done a defrag used spyware and disabled antivirus and other programs freed up alot of ram and it still the same.
my game takes bout a min to load a save file 1-2min to load into the next parts of the game.
what makes this worse is when steam has to connect then verify the files, what happens i forgot to put the cd and i have to do it all over again.

Go into your Steamapps folder, open the folder that is your user name, then hl2, then cfg, then open the valve.rc file with notepad and add "//" to the beginning of the last line that says "startupmenu". This will disable the 3d menu thing at the beginning and thus you can start HL2 faster.
