why does steam take so damn long to update games! I have close to the top of the line internet connetion and all I'm gettting is 30 kbps!? when it first started updateing it was at 397 kbps and within 30 seconds it droped drastically to 120kbps, to 80kbps, 50, 30, then finally 15!!?? its back up to 30kbps now... wtf?! I started downloading then updateing half-life 2 at 4:30 and its now almost 7:30 and its only made it 14%?!

I'm sure there are better ways to spend your time than angrily watching your download meter drop to very normal speeds

What are you updating, all Source games from the first version?

I have Cable and it was done downloading in about 5-10 minutes.

i have cable! it took me like... 10 seconds to dowload the game but the update is takeing for ever its only at 20% right now and its only for one game! I have cox high speed and i have no Idea why its takeing this damn long! can i try turning off my pc for a while and continue updateding latter, i might just need to reboot or something or will i have to start all over agian?

its says its like... 54Mbps... My computer is useing a wireless internet PCI card so that might have something to do with it but not this slow... most definatly not this slow... i know it can go much faster. It's actually running at 144kbps wich is obivously way better then 30kbps but i remember the first time I installed it it did not take this long.

Well downloading large files through WI-FI nick-card is the obvious of why its taking such a long time, your wireless nick-card is loosing packets as all wireless nick-cards do from time to time, this is normal.
Anyway open up Steam, press File, Settings, Internet, check if the right connection speed as selected, if not, select the right connection speed.
Don't watch porn, download other stuff, watch videos as long as Steam is downloading, turn all other internet programs off while Steam downloads. These will keep interrupting Steam.

thanx... i've never heard my wi-fi card called a nick-card before but whatever... I think it had something to do with trying to update CS:S at the same time... I put it on "pause update" but after HL2 finished i told it to continue where it had left off ( 9% ) when it started it was at 64%. oh well... its working and im off to bed... im tired...
