Wierd problem with cubemaps

Ive always been confused as how to correctly incorporate the env_cubemap entities into the game. I do understand how to correctly place them in hammer. However, what i do not understand is that before i place the env_cubemaps in hammer, should i compile the map in question and then run "buildcubemaps" in hl2 and then place them in hammer? Because when i place them in hammer first, and then run "buildcubemaps" in hl2, the game crashes to the desktop. Any help would be appreciated.
 
That doesn't make any sense, to compile, build[nonexistantatthispoint]cubemaps, then add them.

You put cubemaps in the map (for reflection purposes), and then compile and buildcubemaps in console after compile. If it crashes, try doing it on a different PC.
 
thanks for the help, it worked, but interestingly enough, when i do make a mistake and the game crashes, i have to reinstall sdk in order for the buildcubemaps command to work again
