Will Half Life 2 win 'Game of the Year' awards?

So far Half Life 2 has been getting stellar reviews, with things being said about the game from, "revolutionary" to "possibly the best game ever," it seems a lock that Half Life 2 will be in contention for a good many GOTY awards. However (and this is coming from a Half Life 2 fanboy), I've been playing GTA:SA for the past week, and this game is a wonder to behold - far better than the previous two and I loved them both. Add to this, the stellar reviews GTA:SA has been getting (IGN calls it the best PS2 game ever and possibly the best game ever? sounds a bit familiar), I have to say, this latest GTA might give HL2 a run for its money.

And so why should we care if HL2 wins GOTY awards? Well you either care or don't care, but it's fun to see a game you've been following for so long, getting the respect you think it deserves. It's sort of like rooting for your favorite team.

Really though, I wouldn't mind seeing either of these two games win GOTY awards, though I would prefer HL2 win those since this is the game I've been following the longest out of all the others. Halo 2 might put up a fight as well, but I need to play that game first before I lay judgement (soon after I finish playing GTA:SA, which probably won't be for a while). Metal Gear Sold 3 might also be a contender, but I really didn't like the last Metal Gear Solid game at all, so we'll see. In any case, what a great time to be a gamer! So many great games to play yet so little time (ugh damn these midterms!).

Yeah, that's pretty much fact, especially in PC only publications where HL2 practically has no competition. But in multiplatform publications where it'll contend with the likes of GTA:SA, Halo 2, Metroid Prime 2 and possibly Metal Gear Solid 3, it'll definately be one tight race!

I agree that most of the games you listed will steal some HL2 thunder, Jiffra.

I think a lot of people are missing a serious sleeper: Metroid Prime 2: Echos. This game is getting some attention from a few places and none from others. MP2 is definitly flying under the radar and I think its gonna surprise a lot of folks. It appears to have deep gameplay, interactivity to accompany the great graphics and sound.

They are fun games, I'm looking forward to GTA:SA tomorrow! But I think a 9.9...Idk that seems high for any game really..except HL2!

Yeehaw! Somebody FINALLY brings in Metroid Prime 2! The original Metroid Prime is my fav. game next to Half-Life and Ocarina of Time. Call me a console gamer if you will, but know this: I despise consoles. But I'm a sucker for Nintendo's level of quality. MP2 will definatley get somewhat brushed over, but at least it won't hurt me none, since I have preordered already. Go Metroid!

It is amazing. The second half of 2004 has been remarkable.

The first half wasn't shabby, with UT2k4 and Far Cry, but the quality of games in the second half is unbelievable.

Go Metroid indeed. I fully expect an equal or better experience than Metroid Prime. Nintendo always likes to outdo themselves.

It's overlooked for now. Until Nov. 15......sweet Jesus what a killer gaming month. HL2, MP2, Halo 2, MGS3......unprecedented.

Ive been spectating many forums of people who discuss the leak. Most say that its fun for a few hours...and then gets pretty lame, one guy said, this is Halo-not Halo "combat evolved" Most people just said "meh" when commented on the leak
