Hey guys, the reason Im asking this is because I hate having programs running the background. I have a gig of ram, but I just hate the fact that while im running a game there is a program running in the background.

What Im wondering is, will Steam allow you to run HL2 without having to open up steam? (after activated) Will it put a half-life 2 shortcut on your desktop. Allowing you to run half-life 2 ONLY and not half-life 2 and steam.

yes if you right click a game in the "My Game" menu there is and option to show on desktop,

You need steam open to run halflife2 either offline or online mode. You NEED steam running. It prevents piracy and steam is halflife2's backbone basically. YOu can put a desktop shortcut to halflife 2 but when you click it- it will open steam then launch halflife2.

Just like pauly said steam has been implemented as a backbone to the game engine, so even if you created a shortcut from the desktop, steam would still be open. I wouldnt worry about it though, i'm sure it's been optimized with the game to make very little performance hit.

Steam is very much a part of HL2. So in effect, it isn't just some program running in the background taking up memory, it's intergrated with the game itself. I'm sure it won't make a dent in your 1Gb of RAM regardless.

Meh, get used to it. Halflife2 will run and look amazing whatever settings you use, and if you have 1gb of RAM I should be the one worrying because I have only got 512mb :P
