So my old computer's motherboard blew up and I thought "this one's a lost cause". I removed both hard drives and put 'em in external caddies. I connected them up to my laptop some time ago.

Here's the problem: the laptop is running Vista, and apparently I need to redefine permissions/ownership for all the files on the old drives. Fine.

What was not fine is that I couldn't only change the user and permissions for each file individually - and there are thousands of files. Now I've sorted that by applying ownership from my account to the entire hard drive and "all subfolders and objects." Only one problem: it doesn't seem to work for the entire 'my pictures' folder.

Anyone got any ideas?

Can you first move all files (The ones you're trying to recover) from the dead system to the laptop, then see if you can take ownership?
Or, you already tried that and it didn't work?

Good Luck.

Bit of a dirty work around, but you could try doing a search for *.* (everything) in the folder, then do a CTRL-A on the result and set the permisions from the right click menu.
