Would this be a good idea?

just wanted to collect peoples views on something here

how would you feel if hl2 was discretely organized in "missions"

and in between those missions you would have some time to explore city 17, where random enemies would spawn?

and then you would go meet alyx at the rendezvous and continue the storyline

sounds cool to me.... relieves some of the linearity

i dont like the idea at all, i love what half life did to games, keeping the action going %100 of the time, no breaks, nothing. Fun as hell

You dont explore a warzone generally. Well, you could, but the result you see in the videos. People will try to kill you, whether you like it or not.

If you're telling a story, you want to keep them involved in the story and not let them out. If the story progression is engaging enough, players would become annoyed at parts of the game that took them out of it for pointless slaughter. That's what Multiplayer is for!

I don't mind the linearity of good books and I don't mind the linearity of good FPSs becuase they are engaging.

/me Says, I agree with Demo!

it's interesting. Could work in a mod.
but one of the best things about HL1 was the gripping pace of the gameplay. One thing after another is nice.

Missions? What you mean like every other friggin' game?

Lame.

At the time I didn't reall notice but looking back now, the fact that you kept going, no breaks was fantastic. Never change it.

Interesting idea, but you'd need a city with the sophistication of GTA or something to keep it fun. It could end up like the horrible ship levels from Unreal 2.

NO ONE who played unreal2 actually explored the ship, they were too buzy checking out aida, shes a helluva lot hotter then alyx thats for sure

That type of game structure is very similar to what Morrowind was like. And that was a great game. I must have put about 250-350 hours of my life into that game in the last 15 months. But that doesn't mean that I want Half-Life 2 to be that type of game. It wouldn't feel right, and I enjoyed the structure of Half-Life 1 even though it was linear.
