What is Hibernation:
Hibernation saves the contents in memory to disk in compressed form, allowing the computer to be turned completely off. Again, you can resume with your desktop and applications intact. Many newer laptops resume from hibernate in 20 seconds to 30 seconds, but the actual time it takes to do this is heavily dependent upon the contents in memory at the time you choose to hibernate your computer.
It can save you between 20-70 seconds of booting time.

How to enable Hibernation ?
# Make sure you're logged onto your PC as Administrator or as a user with Administrator rights.
# You can check the status of your user account by going to Start | Control Panel and selecting the User Account icon.
# Your account should be listed there.
# If it says Computer Administrator you have the rights to make this change.
# To show the Hibernate option under shutdown, select Start | Control Panel, and select the Performance and Maintenance icon.
# Select the Power Options icon under "or pick a Control Panel Icon."
# Select the Hibernate tab, and click on the Enable Hibernation box.
# If Hibernate still doesn't appear, it may be because your PC is fairly new and supports the Stand By low-power shut-down option.
# To make Hibernate appear in the Turn Off Your Computer dialogue, simply hold down the Shift key and Stand By will switch to Hibernate.
# You need to hold down the Shift key to see and use the Hibernate shut-down option

the poll is up,

please vote. the more data I get, the better is the survery.

A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL.

I think i used it once, when i wanted to get the computer back on nothing would respond so i had to restart it completely. So basically now i stick with turning it off, then booting it up again in the morning. It's nice in practice, just cba with it now. Bad first impression!

How much will it take off your power bill comapred to leaving it on all night while you sleep? And can you still run .torrent downloads in the background?

no, its not stand by option.

hibernation write all your memory to a file and save it in HD. Then switch off your system (Turn off your PC, 0 power). After you boote the pc up, it takes 5-10 seconds (depend on the HD performance) to load into desktop.

You can't run torrent application in the background, because your system is turned off. :P

stardog, your pc is completly off.

and i did toy with it for awhile, i thne ealised iw as losing disk space.

it wasnt erasing the previous instances of memory i had a 3 gig hard drive:/ not pretty.

Yeah you lose space,

512 memory = you lose 500 mbyte HD space
1GB memory = you lose 1GB HD space.

I'm happy just turning off my pc and just waiting for everything to load. I don't have to wait long, and i don't sit and wait for it anyway, gets turned on first thing int he morning, i go wash and whatever and its all ready by the time i get back.
Might set my pc up so it automatically turns on every morning though.

I won't ever use hibernation function due to me usually being on it, and CBA to turn it on.

I don't turn off my computer, so yeah, I'm good.

I always turn my computer off when I'm done. It's right next to my bed, so if I left it on I would have sleep deprivation, which we all know leads to schizophrenia. :rolling:

theres no point in hibernating on desktops that feature is only useful on laptops so if your battery dies it will save everything

My boot time only takes 20 seconds from On to desktop :(

I use it sometimes.

FYI do not enable Hibernation in your BIOS as well as in Windows. Leave it disabled in the bios. A lot of times they will conflict and give you a blue screen. They are separate hibernate features.

slow boot time? my PC boots in well under 20 seconds. I'm an impatient person, but not THAT impatient.
