Hi,
I am learning XSI mod tool to help my modteam with modeling the props. I have gotten the basics of modeling with XSI (i'm used to 3ds max myself), but am getting really hung up on textures. In max, you apply textures via a single palette, but in XSI all i see are heirarchys of Supports and Projections all over the place in explorer but still affect each other. I have been able to do a simple planar map as shown in the following picture, but don't know how to texture the model in a way so the sides are not stretched as you can see. I'm have been looking at tutorials for days and not having much luck. If someone could help me get started in understanding the materials and mapping system in XSI I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,

to make sure the sides are not stretched i think u need to UV unwrap. and then move the positions around and make sure that the checkerboard texture has perfect squares. not sure how to do it in XSI.

That makes sense, I would normally do it somewhat like that in max. I think there is a way in XSI (like max) to use multiple projections that only apply to certain faces so i could use multiple planars as opposed to unwrapping.

To be honest I'm not so good with 3ds max texturing either. And i have to use my friend's comp for max anyway so I figure I should learn XSI, at least for this modding extravaganza.

the uite honestly yous shouldnt be on a mod ..you should practise and learn more about 3d... i sugest you pickup a uvw mapping tut for max from this forum.

Thank you for the honest reply. This is less a mod and more of a learning experience for myself and a few friends. We know we have never done this before and are just trying to get started. By posting in this forum I have already done a great deal of searching, and maybe it is just myself, but the tutorials I found did not click. Maybe I'm a slow learner, but every once in a while I prefer to ask a human, just to get a broader picture of things. I have already said I would really prefer not to use max for this although I have been reading them to see what parts of that apply to XSI. I will keep searching.

I have heard about GMax which is to Max i think is what XSI | Modtool is to the standard XSI package. Do you have any experience with using that for HL2?
